Mr Tetley was born in New York City sixty three years ago. He was a former coroner and former councilman of Red Bank. He left a widow and five children. New York Times, 1 September 1911. |
Obituary | 6 September 1911 | John Thacker Tetley, one of Red Bank's best known business men, died shortly after four o'clock last Thursday morning after a sickness of a few months. Death was due to Bright's disease, dropsy and heart trouble. Mr Tetley was born in New York City 63 years ago. When Civil War broke out Mr Tetley who was then 14 years old, enlisted as a drummer boy. A few months later he gave up the life of a drummer boy and shouldered a musket. He was mustered into the 40th Regiment of New York which became famous as the Mozart Regiment. He was honorably discharged from the government service in June 1865. In 1869 he reentered the army, serving as a member of the United States regular engineers. He served in this capacity for two years. About thirty years ago Mr Tetley came to Red Bank and he has lived here ever since. He opened a newspaper stand as soon as he moved to Red Bank and he was still in this business at the time of his death. A few years ago Mr Tetley took his oldest son in business with him and the business was conducted under the firm name of J T Tetley & Son. Mr Tetley thoroughly enjoyed politics and was a very active Republican. He served as one of Red Bank's councilmen two years, was an ex-coroner of Monmouth county and twice served as overseer of the poor of Shrewsbury township. At the time of his death he was vice president of the Republican executive committee of Shrewsbury township. Besides being a business man and a politician, Mr Tetley was a lodge man. He belonged to the Mystic Brotherhood lodge of Free Masons, Navesink Lodge of Odd Fellows, Past Councilor of Senior American Mechanics, Daughters of Liberty, American Order of Foresters and the Grand Army. He was very active in Grand Army work, having been commander of the Red Bank post, and at the time of his death he was quartermaster of the post.
