Notes: THE FIRST DAVIS OF MY LINE TO SAIL TO AMERICA?

According to the research of Bruce Davis Despain; John Davis came to America in 1680 from Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a devout Quaker and was banished by the Duke of York to his colony in America. One of the Quaker beliefs that ran into conflict with the Duke was the refusal to take up arms. John Davis, my great (x8) grandfather, boarded a ship in Edinburgh, Scotland and landed at Long Island, New York. There he married Dorothea Gotherson who was the daughter of a prominent Quakeress preacher Dorothea (Scott) Gotherson, wid of Maj Daniel Gotherson.

They had five children. In 1705 they moved to Pilesgrove Township, Salem, New Jersey. Some of his sons having preceded him in thast county.

It is said that John lived to hundred years old (100) So when was he born?

The earliest known ancestor, so far, of the David family of Salem County was John, of Oyster Bay, Long Island. Family tradition says he was born in Wales. There are several reference to men by the name of John Davis in Long Island, but whether any of them are this John is not known. No marriage record has been found for John and Dorothea, but it has been recognized the The Baronial Order of Magna Charta through the admission of Elmer Garfield Van Name, and others, into membership, indication the the tradition has been generally accepted.

John Davis was a pious man, belonging to a sect called "Singing Quakers" who worshipped out of doors every day. He and Dorothea lived on Long Island until about 1705, when he, or they, went to Pilesgrove Township, Salem Co., NJ. Their son, Isaac, preceded them, followed soon after by the rest of the family. On 2 Jan 1704, John and Isaac Davis, of the Island of Nassau, New York, bought from John Ladd, a right to 700 acres of land, 350 acres to each. (John Smith was a witness). On 6 Mar 1704 an original survey was obtained by John and Isaac from the Proprietors of West Jersey for 700 acres, lying southeastwardly of John Test's land, in Pilesgrove, Salem Co. having footage of 35 chains (2310 feet) on the northeasterly side of Salem Creek, and extending northeastwardly 174 chains (over two miles). On 17 Jul 1718, John Davis, of Pilesgrove, transferred unto two of his sons, David and Malachy, husbandmen, of Salem Co., 237 acres in Pilesgrove Precince, beginning at a corner between said John Davis and Isaac Davis. The receipt was dated February, 1720 and acknowledged 19 Jan 1757 by Abraham Nelson, subscribing witness in order that it might be recorded (an indication that John Davis died after February 1720. From the wills of his sons John and David, and various deeds, it is clear that they were brothers, and that they had brothers, Isaac and Malachi, all of them sons of John Davis.
