This Uncle William was the son of William Muncus and the brother to John.

I do further declare on my oath aforesaid that my only occupation has been that of a farmer, that I am and have been for five years totally incapacitated to pursue that or any other occupation being unable in consequence of rhumatic aflection to raise my right hand to my head or to walk without crutches. I do further declare that I have four in my family residing with me, my wife named Jenie aged about 57, one daughter named Elizabeth aged about 24, one son named William aged about 14 and one granddaughter named Tilitha aged 11. I also declare that my daughter Elizabeth has been for a considerable length of time so enfeebled by disease as to be able to afford either assistance to the family or support for herself.

John (X) Munkers

The first family of four sons and one daughter were old enough to determine that they wanted to go with their William Monkres on his trek to the western lands.

Facts about the Cameron family:

"...John Cameron b. 1786, son of Ezra Cameron and a brother to Elisha Cameron. John married Deborah Roberts in 1814, TN...Deborah dying in KY about 1819 or so. John took his children to his brother Elisha's in Clay Co., Mo and died there on Oct 16, 1820/21. Elisha was guardian of John's children besides raising 11 children of his own.

Ezra Cameron had a sister by the name of Jemima who married John Munkiers. From a Howard Co., MO on July 11, 1820 court record concerning his service in the Revolutionary War,John Munkiers stated at that time he was 62 years old, enlisting in the Rev. War in Georgia in the second year of the war for a term of 3 years. He also stated he was presently a farmer, afflicted with rhumatic problems resulting in not being able to raise his right hand or walk without crutches. He swore that there were four in family members living with him: Jenie, wife abt 57 yrs old, daughter Elizabeth abt 24 years old; son William about 14 yrs old and a grandaughter Tilitha abt 11 years old. He stated that his daughter Elizabeth was so enfeebled by disease that she could not assist the family"

Now if John is father of Ezra and John is brother to Elisha Cameron (the Judge) and Ezra had sister name Jemima who married John Munkers. Making John and Elisha Cameron, Jemima Cameron Munkes uncles. Now I have question. Coul Ezra have brother name Uriah? The father of John Munkers first wife.

James Munkres, the second son of John and the possible Miss Camron Munkers was born 22 Jan 1788. In the 1850 Census James was 62 b in NC. His wife Agnes was b in TN. James d in 1854 age 66 years, his Tombstone says, anyway 1 month 9 days. He married Agnes Crowley in TN and she was born 10 Feb or May 1794 d 6 Aug 1883. Agnes Crowley is the daughter of Jeremiah Crowley.

Letter by Mrs Laura Dell Armstrong states:

"That John Munkres was living on his land in Missouri date 1819. I question this for land in Missouri could not be sold until after 1830s, for Missouri didnt become a state until 1821. There are dates of marriage for the Munkres family in Howard stated by that they were there in 1817 to 1820s.

James served on the first jury in Clay County was charter member of the Old Mt. Pleasant Church and help found Mt Zion.

In spite of the apparent civilization of Clay County, there were still bands of wandering Indians in the county until the 1830s and Elisha Camron mad a fort about five miles east of Liberty, near where his brother, John is presumed to be buried. Fortunately, the fort was never needed, although Agnes did have an Indian experience. One day James was out chopping trees and was cooking pancakes. When she turned around, the cabin was full of Indians, but she badly frightened and practically had hysterics when James finally came back in, eve thought he was tried to point our to her that her experience was mild compared to many pioneer women."

James was very active in establishing civil government in his area of Clay County. He and Judge Elisha Camron set the lines that were used in marketing property and land ownership.

Agnes was a proud Virginia who never let forget anyone who she was. She bore 11 children in twenty years and a lot of her spunk must have been passed on through them, for most of them seem to have done well. There is story about Agnes and a band of Indians. "There were still wandering bands of Indians around Fishing River where James and Agnes settled. The story goes like this: "One day when James was out clearing trees, Agnes was cooking pancakes. When she turn around, the cabin wa full of Indians. She Calmly fed them pancakes, and the Indians played with her baby, Mahala. After that the Indians went on their way, but Agnes was very badly frightened and James had comfort her by reminding her that there had been Indian visits in other days that had not turned out so happily."

There is another story: "Anges and her son were riding to church one Sunday, just a little bit late. As they drew near the Church they heard an organ playing- strange new sound. Agnes stopped her horse in full indignation for no one had ask her if the congregation could buy a organ. She turned her mount around and headed for home, determined that she would never enter a church where such devilish music was being played. She never went to Church again.

Six members of James and Agnes family can found in history of Kansas. James and Agnes never left Missouri but their children did. A James Monkres born in 1829 was the first white man to take claim in Morris County, KA. The Creek near his place is called Munkres Creek and it was dammed and now is lovely recreational lake

When James passed away his land was divided among his heirs.

James and Agnes must have been familiar with Classical things for look what they named their first child.

1. Marcerlious or Marcellus md after 1840 Census and died before the 1850 Census at the age of 27 Children were Agnes and E. J. both girls. Agnes md James M Gasaway and E. Alphuse Calvin Mounkes b 1 Sept 1866, Missouri. Alphuse was 8-10 years when his step father took them to town in a wagon put them out and said "this is a likely place to make a living, you're on your own". All the had was clothes they were. Two older boys when west, Elisha and Alphuse told a friend to tell their stepfather they when east. They walked 125 miles to Neosha Rapids. Elisha went to work for a minister shepherding. Elisha became sick and was taken to town and left. Thinking he was going to died lay down in manger to die. But with luck his brother William came to town from Texas and found him. William took to hotal and call the doctor. They were there for about week, after which William and Elisha when back home.

Stay for while but could settle down here. The next time hear of him is that he when to Canada. Alphuse worked at the Nickle Valley Rance near Merritt, B.C. He was a horse wrangler and stay there for about 3 years. He was on the move again this time for Alberta were he worked at Bar-U Ranch west of High River, again breaking horse. He move again this time to the Quorn Ranch 8 miles west of Stoney Crossing near the Big Rock. By the turn the century Alphuse was scouting around for land for a home of his own. That is the house he brought his bride Rebecca Ann McLaren to. They had five of their six children there. Rebecca parents were William and Margaret McLaren. Four of the six are: Josephine, Margaret, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Robert and William. This start of Moncus/Monkres/Mounkes family in Canada

The Lynch was thought to be Scotch-Irish and originally from NC. This what Miss Petty thinks, but I have found them in Virginia even on ship listed as far back as 1600s.

For a brief comment on the Munkirs men or men closely kin to them who were killed in the border warfare at the time of the Civil War. As far as it is known there was only one who actually fought in the war. It is not know why Redmond Munkirs sons Washington and McDonald were killed but **Redmond David, the son of Solomon Munkirs fought with Quantrill and Anderson. After the murder of his uncles, also married former guerrilla several Carey girls married former bushwhackers, and one Carey girl was married to a Union man who was murdered. Whereupon after the war she married his brother the only survivor of a family of seven or eight boys, most of whom are buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in Clay County, Missouri. No records have been found that the Redmond Munkirs branch ever owned slaves.

Redmond and Polly Lynch Munkirs's son Solomon and Sarah Ferril Munkirs's son was Redmond David Munkirs.

Redmond David Munkirs born 26 Mar 1845 m Mattie Marton. He was killed by Federals May 18,1867. This was the second murder in this family; the grandfather, Esq David L Ferril (a fine old gentleman over 70), was hanged by the Federals in 1864 for no other reason then that he was the grandfather of a young man who had so far successfully eluded the gallant boys in blue. Cousin Shirley said that as a boy over the hills, trying to catch Red When they did catch him, he was at his parents home and his mother rushed out, throwing herself into her boys arms to shield him.

The Clay County Historial discussed the killing of Esquire David L. Ferril.

Judge David Ferril had been killed by Lieut. James Stoffer of Catherwoods regiment, and his party of men, including one Richard Sloan, a native Clay County man. In September, 1866, Mr Sloan made the Clay County Annals when he was waylaid on his way to Bethel Church one Sunday and shot his body was left lying in the road and was not removed for some time. According to county legend, every member of the party involved in hanging Judge Ferril, his violent death at the hands of person unknown. Judge Ferrils tombstone states that he was 65 years, 5 months, 18 days old, and he was killed 21 Aug 1864. Not quite three years later his grandson Redmond David Munkirs was brought to rest near him.

Redmond David Munkirs was a BUSHWACKER and a member of Quantrills gang, Bill Andersons and which is now the James Gang. (Note from Janet. This why I say my mother side (Munkers) killed my father side (Green). Redmond Munkirs in some books on Jesse James, state that Red was at his mother house 18 May 1867, when he shot down by the Federals. Red's mother Sarah Ferril Munkirs, had her arms around him trying to protect him-the men pushed her away and shot the boy before her eyes. He was buried at Shady Grove Cemetery, not far from wehre his grandfather had been buried, not quite two years before. His tombstone reads R. D. Munkirs; March 26,1845, Died may 18,1867.

He could have participated in only the first three, if any. After the Liberty raid, Jesse held up the Lexington Bank in Oct, 1866 and the third was in March, 1867, when they attempted to rob the bank at Savannah. This time Judge McLain fired on them and drove them off, thus becoming the only man ever to shoot it out with Jesse and live to brag about it.

Red Monkers m'd Mattie Marton and they had one child name Lou. Mattie b April 1842 d Aug 1935 at the age of 93. Red and Mattie child was Lorene Redmond Munkirs b 22 June 1867 d Sept 1960 Ogden,Utah. Mattie took the child with her to near Greeley, Colorado after the war to keep house for her brother. When Lorene/Lou was seven years old she went by train and stage coach (Cheyenne to Greeley) to join her mother. Lou lived in Greeley and was schoolteacher there. She married a Mr Hall and two sons. Said the boys became MDs there. Mattie corresponded with Jesse James mother. At one time Lou family had the letters but they are gone now.

More on the Monkirs/Monkres family of Missouri.

NOTE: "Richard who married Penelope Adams was the son of William and Rebecca Lynch. That family spelled their name Munkres. Only William's brother Redmond's family spells it Munkirs. As for the various spellings, the old time way of pronouncing it was Muncas regardless of how it was spelled so that accounts for some of the various spellings. William's son Alvis was murdered. His widow couldn't read or write and when she went to Kansas she said the name was Muncas and someone out there spelled it Mounkes. That is the only family that spells it that way even today. The trouble with spelling the name way back when was that there was too many people who couldn't read and whoever wrote it down spelled it the way they thought it should be and the person who gave their name didn't know if it was spelled right or not. As I said the family of Richard spells it Munkers and Munkres. Redmond's family is Munkirs, William's family is Munkres , Mounkes and Monkres. James family is Munkres. and Uncle William's (2) family is Munkers. I have over 7,000 names in my book and I know someone from each of the families so these are the spellings the various families used and anything else was a case of someone now knowing how to spell it. Alvis's son who went to Canada was named Alvis but he couldn't read or write and when he went up there it wasn't a name that they were familiar with so someone up there spelled it Alpheus and that is the way it stayed. In answer to your questions--William (1) had a daughter Nancy but I have no information on her. I do not have an Isaac or Thomas so I have no idea who they are. From the way is is spelled they could possibly be from the same line as William C. But they are not the sons of William (2) As for J.R. Monkres in Wise Co. that is probably the son of Richard and Penelope. Richard is the son of William who married Rebecca Lynch. The name is supposed to be spelled Munkres but Penelope insisted on changing the spelling and they had a son James born about 1859."

I am copy an article for a book A HISTORY OF NORTHWEST MISSOURI VOL. III: Edited by Walter Williams. Dated 1915

NOTE: The facts in this story concern family member, as I was told, are in corrected. I will post like the book states but in () I will but member , as I was told, they should be. Janet (p) Page 1775-1776

James Franklin Munkres (note the spelling): The Claim of James Franklin Munkres upon the good will and confidence of the people of Andrew County rests upon his long residence here, his high standing as a public-spirited and stirring citizen, the success of his labors and the development of a good agricultural property, and the straightforward manner in which all of his dealings have been carried on. Mr. Munkres is now the owner of Brookdale Farm, a well-cultivated tract of land located in section 26,Benton township, which has been developed under his supervision into one of the really valuable properties of this locality

Born in Clay County, Missouri, Oct 12,1854, Mr. Munkres is a son of William and Frances Jane Thorpe Munkres, both of which families were represented in Howard County, Missouri, as early as Nov. 1819 or two years before the admission of the State to the Union. (That would mean Aug. 10,1821). The Munkres family originated in Cornwall, England (unknown proven but come have came to England from Germany, because at that time England had ship go to America), and came to the shores America, settling at Jamestown, Virginia. ( Note: This does go with land records that I have found). The great-grandfather of James Franklin Munkres, William Munkres was a native of Virginia, served as a soldier throughout the War of Revolution and in his declining years came to Clay County, Missouri, dying at the house of one his sons.( Is the William Munkres who died in Matilda Munkres Stanton home? Or was he talking about an other William Munkres who died in sons home? It is my belief he was talking about William Munkres b 1755 d 1855. What do think?) The maternal grandparents of Mr. Munkres, John and Elizabeth Crowley Thorpe was a sister of Sam Crowley. The paternal grand-parents of Mr. Munkres were Richard and Malinda Lynch Munkres, natives respectively of Virginia and North Carolina and married in the latter state. They came to Clay County, Missouri, as pioneers, Mr. Munkres entering a large tract of land from the Government, and here both he and the grandmother passed away. They reared a family of ten children, as follows: JAMES, WILLIAM, REDMOND, JOHN, DAVID, WASHINGTON, MELVIN, MARY, LOUISA AND RACHEL. William Munkres, the father of James F. Munkres, was born in Tennessee in April,1813, was six years of age when the family moved to Howard Co. Missouri ( Note: That some family research will take the date of this move for the Munkres family as the date they move to Missouri but will not believe the family lineage lines of James Franklin Munkres)and subsequently went to Clay County, where he continued to have interests throughout this life, although in 1858 he moved to Andrew County, where he was engaged in farming until his death, at the home of his son, in 1894. Mrs. Munkres, who was born in Holt County, Missouri, born in 1828, died in Clay County in January,1856, aged twenty-eight years. (This William was in Clay Co. MO until 1858 so why can he not be William JR on records. Could this man be JP too? He could have been the single man in the 1850 Census for he was married after 1850.)

James Franklin Munkres, the only child of his parents, was two years of age when his mother died, and for about three years thereafter resided with his grandparents. In 1860 he came to Andrew County, Missouri, and for about ten years boarded around at different houses, while he was securing his education in the public schools and William Jewell College, at Liberty, Missouri, which he attended about two years. In 1868, Mr Munkres and his father began baching it on the farm, and thus continued until the marriage of the younger man, when he set up an establishment of his own. Mr Munkres has continued to be engaged in general farming and stock raising, and has met with good success in each department, raising large crops of grain annually and feeding large herds of stock. Brookdale Farm is a tract of 240 acres, the northwest quarter of section 26 and the south quarter of section 23, township 61 range 35, 1 miles northwest of Rosendale. Here are located on an elevation, sixty-eight rods from the highway, with a grove and creek to the south of the residence. Mr. Munkres is skilled and practical farmer, ready at all times to experiment with new discoveries and inventions, and keeping fully abreast of his vocation. He is democrat in his political views, and has served capably as justice of the peace for one term and as member of the school board for twenty years.

On Oct 6,1878, Mr. Munkres was married to Miss Mary A Wilhelm, who was born in Andrew County, Missouri, March 19,1860, a daughter of Ferdinand and Anna Benner Wilhelm, the former native of Stotzen, and latter of Hirschleheim, both towns in the Province of Hanover, Germany. They were married in St Charles County, Missouri, Dec 24,1847 and both died in Andrew County, MO., the father in 1874, when she had resided for fourteen years. They were the parents of one son and four daughters. J. L. a resident fo Benton Township; Helen C, the wife of Jacob Schunck of Benton Township; Henrietta D, who was the wife of Owen Deardoff and now deceased; Elizabeth deceased, who was the wife of J. B, Guinn and Mrs. Munkres. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Munkres: CLARE C B b July 11,1879, a teacher in the public schools in Andrew County, educated at Gallatin, MO. College and the business college at Shenandoah, Iowa; NELLI C b Aug 30,1881, who graduated from Grand Business College, received instruction in instrumental music, and is now a teacher of music; and ANNA FRANCES b Feb 7,1892, educated in the Savannah High School, married Frank E Johnson, in Feb,1910, resides at Bolckow, and has one daughter Mary Louise. Both Mr. And Mrs. Munkres are well educated, she being a graduate of Savannah High School, and he having been a school teacher in the rural schools of Andrew County, 1875, 1876 and the winter of 1877,1878. (Note: This makes me wonder with all his learning, was his dad educated to the point that he could have been JP in Clay Co. MO.? I wonder why others think that he did not know his family lineage lines for this man to me seem to be a learned man. With all the William Munkres/Munkers man around no wonder you need score card to see who was who. Has anyone look into this fact to see if this William could read and write his name?)
