'Suky' WEBB was born about 1831 in Virginia.18 Susannah 'Suky' WEBB and John R. 'Big John' WEBB were
married in 1855. John R. 'Big John' WEBB
(son of James A. WEBB and Sarah Jane GALLIMORE) was born on 11 Apr 1835 in Grayson
County, Virginia.205
John R. Webb enlisted in Co. I, 63rd Va Infantry at Wytheville 15 May 1861
at the age of 21. He was promoted to corporal then to sergeant on 1 Sept 1863.
He was captured 5 July 1864 by the forces under General Sherman's command near
Chattahoochee, Georgia, and sent to military prison at Louisville, Kentucky.
On 18 Jul 1864 he was sent to Camp Douglas at Nashville, and was discharged
16 May 1865. (National Archives military records)
A statement written by John on 29 Dec 1864 at Camp Douglas as found in the
National Archives reads "Sir, I, John R. Webb, a private of Co. I, 63rd
Virginia Infantry, Would most respectfully represent that I was Enlisted into
the Rebel Service at Wytheville, Va. on 12th May 1861. At the time of my Enlistment
the greatest excitement prevailed throughout the Country and like so many misguided
men I drifted into this Rebellion without being aware of the great wrong I was
committing.
"I would further represent that I was captured at Chattahoochee Georgia
on 5th July 1864 by Gen'l Thomas' command, and that I do not desire to be returned
South in Exchange, but would most respectfully ask that permission be granted
me to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States that I may become again
a free man, and enjoy the privileges of an American Citizen.
"I am Sir, Very Respectfully & c, John R. Webb, Co. I, 63rd Virginia
Infantry, To: Lt. Col. L.C. Skinner - Commissary Prisoners."
According to Ron Turner, John was known as Carroll County John as he traveled
back and forth between West Virginia where his family had moved and Carroll County.
He was the only member of his family who had gone to West Virginia and joined
the Confederate Army. The others joined the Union Army. Susannah 'Suky' WEBB
and John R. 'Big John' WEBB had the following children:
