6. John WEBB was born on 20 Jul 1792 in Carroll County, Virginia.22,23 He died on 8 Jun 1876 in Carroll County, Virginia.22,23 He was buried on 10 Jun 1876 in Webb-Thompson Cm, Snake Creek, Carroll County, Virginia.24
The marriage register and minister's returns list the wedding date as Oct 17, and Octavia Webb in her bible lists the date as Oct. 26. The marriage register of Patrick County and the bond lists the bond as 17 Oct. Hannah in her widow's pension lists the marriage as 26 Oct.

"He was among the first officers of Carroll County." (from 3rd Webb Reunion, Snake Creek Church, July 28, 1935)

Hannah applied for a Widow's Pension for her husband's service in the War of 1812. On her application she wrote, "Was drafted at Grayson C H. abt the 1" Feby 1814 in Capt Timothy Dalton's Co Va Mil discharged about the first of March 1815." The application was rejected 23 Aug 1879 "on the ground of insufficient service." The case was reopened and records show that Hannah did receive pension payments in 1883.

"He was raised on Snake Creek, almost in sight of the place where he is buried. He eloped when he was 23. The bride was Hannah Cock, age fifteen and a half. They went to Patrick County where on October 17, 1815 they were married. They acquired land between Red Hill and Snake Creek and lived there all their lives. They were married 61 years and Hannah survived him an additional fourteen years." (from an unidentified source) Thomas Quesinberry in an affidavit filed with Hannah's widow's pension states that he was present at the marriage of Hannah and John Webb.

"John Webb and Hannah Cocke were united in matrimony Oct. 26, 1815 by Thomas Whitlock at a house near the Ward's Gap at the top of the Blue Ridge."
"The aforesaid John Webb was taken ill on the morning of the 8th of June 1876 and departed this life at 8 P.M. of the same day - died as if he had dropped to sleep - all his living children being present except Abner Webb who resides in Arkansas. Said John Webb was buried at 11 A.M. of June the 10th 1876 which was the third day of his death. His burial was attended by a vast number of people. His wife has lost a good husband, and his children a dear father indeed. But may the bereaved consider that the Lord is God, and doeth his will in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth."
"John Webbs Father's name was Henry Webb From Black - Water in Franklin Co., Va. Said John Webb's mother was Susanna Cocke."
"John and Hannah Webb Settled residence on Snake Creek and lived there together over 60 years."
"The funerals of John Webb & George Quesenberry were preached on Aug. 5, 1877 by J.M. Jennings and Thomas Dickens." (All above quotes from Isaac Webb bible)

His grave marker was perhaps made by his son Isaac Webb and reads: Sacred to the Memory of John Webb who died June 8, 1876, Age 83 years 10 mos and 19 days.

John WEBB and Hannah COCHE were married on 26 Oct 1815 in Patrick County, Virginia.25 Hannah COCHE (daughter of Andrew COCHE and Penelope WARD) was born on 6 Jan 1800.26 She died on 1 Jun 1890 in Carroll County, Virginia.12 She died on 2 Jun 1890 in Carroll County, Virginia.27 She was buried on 3 Jun 1890.28 She was also known as Hannah Webb.
Hannah applied for a widow's pension for her husband's service in the War of 1812. After being denied, she was granted a pension in 1883. When she did not receive the first check, her son Isaac intervened for her. There is considerable correspondence on this matter at the National Archives. Apparently a check was issued to Hannah and sent to Snake Creek, Arkansas rather than Snake Creek, Virginia. It apparently arrived at Drake's Creek, Arkansas. There was no Snake Creek. A duplicate check was issued to Hannah due to Isaac's intervention. The original check was apparently forged and not taken to a bank for cashing until three years later. This caused suspicion by the bank, and an agent was called to investigate. As a duplicate had been issued to Hannah, payment had been stopped on the original check.
Isaac in his 1886 letter to the pension office stated that his mother had lived with him since 1878.

"Hannah Webb departed this life, 8 A.M. Mond. June 2, 1890 and buried 12 N on Tuesday June 3, 1890," (Isaac Webb bible) According to Octavia Webb's bible Hannah "spent her last 12 yrs. with her son Isaac Webb." The Carroll County Circuit Court Register of Deaths lists her death date as June 1, 1890. Her son Isaac when reporting her death named her parents as John and Penelope which does not agree with other information. The register was witnessed by James F. Goad, father-in-law to Hannah's daughter, Octavia. "James F. Goad commissioner of the Revenue of the Eastern District in Said County to swear that in making out the foregoing List of Deaths I have pursued the Directions of chapter 104 of the Code of Virginia Edition of 1873 as amended by the act of Assembly of 1874 to the best of my skill...."
