William Riley Horton "was mustered into Co. G., Sixty-third Virginia
Regiment and made third corporal. He was transferred to Co. I on January 17,
1863 when the regiment reorganized and served until August, 1864 when he became
separated from his company. He returned home after the war and lived until 1920.
He was blind the last 30 years of his life....
"He was a school teacher and a very learned for man of his day. After
the Civil War, times were so hard that Grandfather said he learned to make shoes
for his family, as they were so expensive. My grandmother said that her father
taught her in the evening by a big lightwood fire.
"My great-grandfather had a goatee, his hair was snow white and after
each nap I remember he would comb his hair and goatee first thing. He had a
melodious deep bass voice, a regular basso-profunda, and he and my grandmother
often sang duets, accompanied on the little parlor organ by Great Aunt Alice,
Uncle Ellis' last wife.... One could ask Grandfather the derivation of any
word, he could tell you from whatever language it was derived." (Tillinghast,
