"Charles Martin was mustered into Company G 63 Va., May 15, 1862, Camp
Jackson. Transferred to Company I, Jan 17, 1863. July 10, 1862 transferred to
Co. E, 3rd Confederate Engineers. He was wounded in the left leg in the battle
of New Market, May 15, 1864." (Jackson, Martin Family History, p.424

"He was first detailed as a blacksmith and then as the company was leaving
for Tennessee, he was transferred to the Engineer Corps." (Jackson, Martin
Family History, p.412)
He was baptized in 1873 at the Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church where
he was a deacon for many years. (Jackson, Martin Family History, p.423)
His gravestone reads, "He lived an honorable life."
He is listed as a blacksmith on the 1880 Laurel Fork, Carroll County, Va.
Census. The 1920 census finds Charles Martin widowed and living with his daughter
Hannah and her husband Charles Goad. Mary 'Polly' A. Talbott WEBB and Charles
MARTIN Lt. had the following children:

According to Martha Cock and grave marker, Penelope was born 28 Dec 1869.
"She was cheerful, and of good lively business qualities, and passed
friendly animation, and independent kindness. She lived a life of christianity
and truth; and, without endeavoring to offend, would firmly and gently express
her honest conviction. She was a good step-mother, a kind and affectionate companion,
and a tender, loving mother. She was taken sick with Pneumonia, Dec. 3, 1900,
and lingered for eight days.... A short time before she passed away, she seemed
to awake from her sleep, and spoke of seeing the most beautiful light that she
had ever beheld.... Just before she breathed her last, she looked out through
the window and exclaimed, 'How bright everything looks!'.... On Dec. 13, 1900,
