September 2007 - Brutal Murder

Brutal Murder. - We learn from William Dutcher, Esq., of Columbus, the following particulars of a brutal murder committed at Lowell, Dodge County, on Monday last. A misunderstanding had for some time existed between Mr. Joseph Goling, a well known and worth German, and a man by the name of James Kidney, both residents of Lowell. Kidney had talked of Goling in a manner that did not please him, and meeting him on Monday, Goling said to him that he must not repeat his words, when Kidney drew a revolver and shot Goling in the abdomen. Goling tried to wrest the pistol from him, but Kidney drew back and shot him twice through the lungs, when Goling succeeded in getting the pstol, but soon died with it in his hand. The occurrence happened in the street, in the neighborhood of many citizens, but the act was too sudden to be prevented by those who witnessed it. The murder was an unprovoked one, and the murderer came near to being lynched by the exasperated citizens. - Kidney is now in jail in Juneau.

The most likely candidate to be this James Kidney is James son of Robert K. [Jacobus/Robert Isaac/Jan] and Bethia Graham Kidney due to the location on Lowell, Dodge, WI where James was a resident in 1850 and married in 1857.
