Newtownhamilton is in the Barony of Upper
Fews, 9 miles, Irish, south by east from Armagh and 8 miles, Irish, west of Newry. It is situated on rising ground and favourably impresses the stranger entering from either Armagh, Newry or
Castleblaney. There are three good streets in the town and a large square. The houses are well built and maintained in excellent condition. A free market is held every saturday for butter, eggs and fowl and a fair on the last saturday of every month for cattle, sheep, pigs and farm horses. Hiring fairs are held on the last saturday
of May and the last saturday of November. A few hand-loom weavers live in the town. Resident agents for handkerchief manufacturers
give out work to be hemstitched and embroidered. It is estimated that about 1,500 of the female residents of Newtownhamilton and district receive employment in this way. Within half a mile from the Armagh direction the land
is good and it is nearly all good toward the Monaghan border. Oats, Potatoes and Flax are the chief crops - a great deal of Flax. It is also a fair grass country and the farmers make a feature of dairying
