Harold Rohr in his book Remembers Empire...in the good old days, states, "Mike Horen operated a draying or freight delivery hire for a while after that and the barn was used for storage after that, such as the local funeral hearse. I don't know what he did for a living after that. He was town Marshall for many years after that, but the job paid no money. I don't know where he lived - possibly in a furnished room in the barn. He still lived there in the summer of 1926 or 1927. I was working at the sawmill at Glen Haven and one day, while loading lumber on the Str. Stewart, Mike came down to the dock either to arrest Captain Anderson or to serve some legal papers to him. Mike couldn't' legally come aboard ship to do it and the captain declined to come ashore. So-stalemate or would say gridlock. That was during school vacation. I believe that sometime between the time I left Empire in the Fall of 1928 and when I returned for the Summer in 1933, the transfer of ownership of the livery barn, or at least its use, was made. I don't recall seeing or hearing anything of Mike since I left in 1928. P.S. Possibly too much detail in the above. However, I know for sure that Mr. Horen was active and "in business" in the summer of 1926 or 1927. I firmly believe that transfer of the barn took place after 1928.... Mike Horen was our sheriff. It was said of him if he found a drunk lying in the sun he would drag him to a shady place. We had a jail, but I doubt if he put anyone in it. It stood by itself... Mike Horen (First Election of the New Century) Michael Horen, Constable among other men listed as being elected for different positions: Ackerman, Dailey, Taylor, King, Holden, Doran, Carr, Richardson, Burke, Axtell. Mike Horen was elected again as Constable on April 5, 1909.@ (Anita Cook Pratt, great grandaughter of Mike Horen, supplied this information).

Michael died on 13 December 1935 in Traverse City. His obituary was published the following day in the Traverse City Record Eagle.
