ISAIAH COLE (1809-1899) AND BETSEY (--?--) (1814-1861)

 

1. Isaiah J. Cole was born on 29 November 1809[1] in Steuben County, New York, and died on 30[2] or 31 October 1899 in Shortsville, Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.[3] He was married prior to 1832 to Betsey (B?B). Betsey was born on 6 June 1814[4] in New York and died on 21 May 1861[5] in Pennsylvania, probably in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

 The identity of Isaiah=s parents are as yet unknown. He is known to have been born in Steuben County, New York. The 1830 census lists 20 Coles in that county. In the village of Hornby a cluster of three Coles are of particular interest: Chester, Jeremiah, and Joseph. Isaiah named his oldest son Chester and it is possible that the Steuben County Chester Cole is a relative. In 1830, Chester Cole=s household contained two males under the age of five, five males aged 15 to 20, one male aged 40 to 50 (Chester), one female under five, one female aged 10 to 15, and one female aged 40 to 50. Isaiah was about 21-years-old in 1830 and could be one of the 15 to 20-year-old males .[6] Chester Cole=s household was living in Campbell, Steuben County, New York in 1840.[7]

      Nearby were the two other Cole homes. Joseph=s household contained one male under the age of 5, one male aged 5 to 10, one male aged 30 to 40 (Joseph), one female under five, two females aged 10 to 15, and one female aged 30 to 40- clearly a 21-year-old Isaiah is not in this household. [8] Jeremiah=s household contained only one male aged 20 to 30 (Jeremiah) and one female aged 20 to 30- again, Isaiah is not in this household.[9] 

Isaiah was reported to have moved to Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania as early as 1831 or 1832.[10] In 1840, Isaiah was living in Chatham, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. His household contained one male under the age of five (Dennis), one male aged 5 to 10 (Chester), one male aged 20 to 30 (Isaiah), two females under the age of five (Edith and Charlotte), one female aged 5 to 10 (Sarah), and one female aged 20 to 30 (Betsy).[11] One other Cole family is listed in the 1840 census for Chatham township- headed by Elias Cole. His household contained only one male aged 20 to 30 (Elias).[12]

 

On 13 September 1850, Isaiah=s farm was valued at $600. His wife Betsy could not read or write. Living in the household were eight children: Chester B. (18), Sarah (16), Edith (14), Dennis (13), Charlotte (10), Rosilla (7), Isaiah (5), and Mary (3).[13] Next door was the household of John and Charity (B?B) Short and living with this family was 18-year-old Sylvester Cole, a Pennsylania native.[14] It is likely he was the son of Sylvester and Mercy (B?B) Cole, who were the Short=s next door neighbors. The elder Sylvester Cole was a 60-year-old Rhode Island native and his wife was 52-years-old and had been born in New York. Three of their children, 23-year-old Leander, 13-year-old Mercy, and 10-year-old John, as well as a 5-year-old girl named Margaret Rodgers, lived at home. Sylvester and Leander worked as laborers.[15]

 

On 23 July 1860, there were six people living in Isaiah=s household. Isaiah was farming and owned $1,200 worth of real estate and $600 in personal property. Sons Chester worked as a carpenter and Isaiah as a farm laborer. Rosilla, Isaiah Jr., and Mary all attended school.[16]  Betsy Cole had less than a year to live when the census was taken, dying on 21 May 1861. She was buried in Short Cemetery in Chatham township.[17]

 

On 8 July 1870, Isaiah was living with his daughter Edith. He was listed as 63-years-old and an invalid. Edith=s husband, Charles Bartholomew, headed the household, which also contained their four children.[18]

 

In 1880, Isaiah was living with his son Isaiah in Pioneer township, Missaukee County, Michigan.[19]

 

Isaiah died on XX October 1899. from heart disease after a six weeks illness. He was buried in on 2 November 1899 in Short Cemetery in Shortsville.[20] DeRuyter Avery was named executor of his will.[21]

 

Isaiah J. and Betsy (B?B) Cole were the parents of eight children:

 

2. CHESTER B. COLE was born in 1832 in Pennsylvania or New York.

3. SARAH COLE was born on 3 February1834 in Pennsylvania. Sarah was married to Sylvester Kelly.

4. EDITH COLE was born in 1836 in Pennsylvania.

5. DENNIS J. COLE was born in 1838 in Pennsylvania and died in 1906.

6. CHARLOTTE COLE was born in 1840. She was married to Vine Palmer.

7. ROSILLA COLE was born on 9 January 1844 in Pennsylvania.

8. ISAIAH J. COLE was born on 9 February 1846 in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

9. MARY COLE was born in 1847 in Pennsylvania.

 

2. Chester B. Cole was born in 1832/1833 in either Pennsylvania or New York. He was married to Diantha S. (B?B). Diantha was born circa 1844 in New York.

 

In 1880, Chester was living with his family in Sabinsville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Chester was working as a wagon maker and his wife was keeping house. Living with the family were the couples= four sons: James, Sherman, Herman, and Charles; and an 11-year-old niece, Francis Jantt.[22]

 

In 1908, Chester was a retired carpenter and he and Diantha lived in Sabinsville, Clymer township, Tioga County as did their sons James, Sherman, Herman, and Charles.[23]

 A Chester B. Cole=s will was probated in 1929.[24]

Chester and Diantha (B?B) Cole were the parents of four children:

 

1.                   JAMES W. COLE was born circa 1869 in Pennsylvania. In 1908, James worked as an engineer while living in Sabinsville.[26]

2.                   SHERMAN COLE was born circa 1871 in Pennsylvania. In 1908, Sherman worked as a chaffeur while living in Sabinsville.[27]

3.                   HERMAN COLE was born circa 1871 in Pennsylvania. In 1908, Herman lived in Sabinsville.[28]

4.                   CHARLES D. COLE was born circa 1873 in Pennsylvania. Charles was married to Inis M. (B?B). In 1908, he worked as a bay presser and thresher while living in Sabinsville.[29]

 

3. Sarah Cole was born on 3 February 1834 in Pennsylvania and died on 29 April 1867 in Pennsylvania. Sarah is buried at the Short Cemetery in Tioga County, Pennsylvania.[30] She was married to Sylvester F. Kelley. Sylvester was born about 1814 in New York.

In 1860, Sarah and Sylvester were living in Chatham township with their one-year-old son and Sarah=s brother Dennis. Sylvester owned $500 in real estate and $200 in personal property.[31]

Sarah died on 29 April 1867 and is buried next to her parents in the Short Cemetery in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.[32]

Sylvester was married to Sally M. (B?B) prior to 1880. On XX XX 1880, Sylvester was living in Sabinsville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, two households away from his former brother-in-law, Chester B. Cole. Sylvester was working, like Chester, as a wagon maker. His wife Sally was at home as was her 18-year-old daughter Emma Newton.[33]

 Sylvester and Sarah (Cole) Kelly were the parents of one child:

 1.                    CHARLES KELLY was born in 1858/1859 in Pennsylvania.

 

4. Edith Cole was married to Charles Bartholomew. On 8 July 1870, Charles and Edith lived on a farm in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The farm was valued at $4,000 and their personal property at $700. Living in the household were their four children: Harmon, an 11-year-old attending school; 9-year-old Ida; 4-year-old Wallace; and 2-year-old Olen. Edith=s father Isaiah also lived with the household.[34]

 Edith was married between 1870 and 1880 to Ebenezer H. Briggs. Ebenezer was born circa 1816 in New York. He had been married circa 1841 to Rhoda (B?B). Rhoda was born circa 1820 in Pennsylvania and died prior to 1870. On 16 September 1850, Ebenezer and Rhoda were living on a farm in Middlebury township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.[35]

In 1880, Ebenezer and Edith were living in Middlebury, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Edith=s oldest children from her first marriage, Herman and Ida, were living with the couple while teaching. Her two youngest children were at home.[36] In 1908, Edith was a widow and lived on Route 1 in Tioga County.[37]

 

Charles and Edith (Cole) Bartholomew were the parents of four children:

1.                    HERMAN A. BARTHOLOMEW was born on 28 September 1858 in Pennsylvania[38] and died on 9 February 1908. Herman was married to May J, (B?B). She was born on 23 November 1863 and died on 7 August 1951.

2.                    IDA M. BARTHOLOMEW was born circa 1861 in Pennsylvania.

3.                    WALLACE J. BARTHOLOMEW was born circa 1866 in Pennsylvania.

4.                    OLEN F. BARTHOLOMEW was born circa 1868 in Pennsylvania.

 5. Dennis J. Cole was born in 1838 in Pennsylvania and died in 1906.[39] He was married first to Sarah A. (B?B). Sarah was born on 23 March 1847 and died on 13 June 1875. Dennis was married second to Lavinia (B?B). Lavinia was born in 1848 and died in 1905. All three are buried at the Old Cloos Burying Ground in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.[40]

 

In 1860, Dennis was living with his brother-in-law and sister, Sylvester and Sarah Kelley, in Chatham township. Dennis owned $300 in real estate and worked as a farm laborer.[41]

 

In 1880, Dennis and his second wife Lavinia were living in Chatham, Tioga County. He was working as a farmer and his wife was keeping house. Their oldest children, Mary and Grant, were attending school, while their youngest child Clifton was at home. Lavinia=s daughter, Nellie Casement, lived with the couple and attended school.[42]

 

Dennis and Sarah (B?B) Cole were the parents of one child:

 

1.                    FRANK W. COLE was born on 24 March 1868. He died on 1 January 1870 and is buried in the Old Cloos Burying Ground in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

 

Dennis and Lavinia (B?B) (Casement) Cole were the parents of three children:

 

1.                    MARY COLE was born circa 1870 in Pennsylvania.

2.                    GRANT COLE was born circa 1873 in Pennsylvania.

3.                    CLIFTON COLE was born circa 1879 in Pennsylvania.

 

6. Charlotte Cole was born circa 1840 in Pennsylvania. She was married to Vine H. Palmer. Vine was born circa 1836 in Pennsylvania.

 

In 1880, Vine and Charlotte were living in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Vine was a farmer and Charlotte was keeping house. Son Frank was at home and daughter Mary was attending school.[43]

 

Vine H. and Charlotte (Cole) Palmer were the parents of two children:

 

1.                    FRANK L. PALMER was born circa 1861 in Pennsylvania.

2.                    MARY A. PALMER was born circa 1868 in Pennsylvania.

 

 

 

8. Isaiah J. Cole, Jr. was born on 9 February 1846 in Chatham township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania[44] and died on 14 September 1923 in Boardman township, Kalkaska County, Michigan.[45] Isaiah was married on 13 March 1871 at Emporium, Cameron County, Pennsylvania[46] to Clara Kreps.[47] Clara was born on 31 August 1853 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Charles Kreps and Jane Montgomery,[48] and died on 21 June 1907 in Boardman township, Kalkaska County, Michigan.[49]

Isaiah enlisted for service during the Civil War at Troy, Pennsylvania on 18 August 1861 in Company E of the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry Volunteers. He was a resident of Chester County, Pennsylvania and was working as a farmer. At the time of his enlistment he was five ft five inches tall, had a light complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, and was working as a farmer. He was honorably discharged on 24 November 1863 at Portsmouth, Virginia and re-enlisted for three years on the next day. In June and July of 1864 he was absent and in the hospital at Fort Monroe recovering from a wound on his right arm, below the elbow, that he received in action on 15 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 September 1864. He was appointed a Sergeant on 20 February 1865. He served until 13 August 1865 before being mustered out at Richmond, Virginia. Following his discharge he returned home to Chatham township and was sick for a while, with Dr. Horace Simmons treating him[50]

Following the Civil War, Isaiah was married in 1871 to Clara Kreps. C. M. Coleman, a Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony.[51] The couple moved to Michigan in 1874.[52]

In 1880, Isaiah lived in Pioneer township, Missaukee County, Michigan with his wife Clara, daughter Blanche, and father Isaiah.[53] Isaiah was farming and Clara was keeping house.

Although the 1890 population schedules for Kalkaska County, Michigan were destroyed after being damaged in a fire, the Veterans schedules have survived. Isaiah was listed as having received a gunshot wound in his right elbow during the conflict.[54] He applied for a pension in the 1890s and on 19 November 1892 he asked for an increase. He was examined by a doctor who verified the presence of a wound in his right arm. The doctor also noted that Isaiah had rheumatism, disease of the kidneys, liver vertigo, and general debility. Isaiah claimed AI am about 1/5 of a man at manual labor. I have pain in rt forearm most all the time. I have neuralgia in forehead almost all the time. I have rheumatism in left hip so that I can do nothing in wet weather. I have pain small of back by spells. I also have pain between shoulders and am constipated. I get dizzy by spells.@ Over the course of his life his pension increased from $6 a month in 1891 to $30 by 1921[55]

In June 1900, Isaiah and Clara lived in Boardman township with four of their children- Blanch, Herman, Clifford, and Percy. Isaiah was farming.

Clara died from Acerebretis@ on 21 June 1907 in Boardman township, Kalkaska County.[56]

On 11 April 1910, Isaiah was living with his son Percy and a housekeeper, Saran Bennett [?] in Boardman township, Kalkaska County. Isaiah was reported to be still farming while Percy was unemployed.[57]

On 12 January 1920, Isaiah and his wife Jessie A. (B?B) were still living in Boardman township. Isaiah was again reported to be farming.[58]

 

Isaiah died on 14 September 1923 in Boardman township, Kalkaska County, reportedly from Aapoplexy.@[59] An obituary appeared in the Kalkaska Leader and the Kalkaskaian on 20 September 1923:

 

AOBITUARY. Isaiah J. Cole, who lived alone on his farm about two miles south of South Boardman, was found dead in his home by a neighbor last Monday, September 17. It is believed he died last Friday. Mr. Cole was about 81 years old. He was a pioneer of Kalkaska county, coming here about 30 years ago from Pennsylvania. His wife died about 17 years ago. Mr. Cole is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Wolborn of Traverse City, and four sons - Bert and Percy Cole of Ludington, Herman Cole of Flint, and Clifford Cole, whose present address is unknown by the relatives. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War. Funeral services were held at the South Boardman M.E. church today (Thursday) at 10 a.m. Rev. Rochelle of Kalkaska preaching the funeral sermon. The services were conducted by undertaker L. M. Clapp and interment was made in the South Boardman cemetery. The daughter and three sons were in attendance at the funeral.@

5.                    MAUDE COLE was born on 26 October 1879. Died before 13 April 1898.

6.                    BERT COLE was born on 7 January 1880.

7.                    HERMAN COLE was born on 18 June 1883.

8.                    CLIFFORD COLE was born on 9 May 1886.

9.                    RETTIE COLE was born on 8 June 1888. Died before 13 April 1898.

10.                 CLAUDE COLE was born on 7 April 1890. Died before 13 April 1898.

11.                 DOLLEY COLE was born on 8 July 1893. Died before 13 April 1898.

His Civil War  pension file lists the dates as either 9 January 1843, 9 January 1844, or 9 February 1846; Isaiah Cole Civil War pension file, certificate 573512,  National Archives, Washington, D.C. His death certificate indicates a birthdate of 9 February 1842; Kalkaska County Deaths, Liber 1:100. His pension file also lists his birthplace as Tioga or Chester County, Pennsylvania. His sworn General Affidavit made on 7 June 1916 attempted to clear up the issue. Isaiah states that the family bible page was missing and he believed his birthdate was 9 February 1846. He claimed that Notary Publics had twice made mistakes and that the date of 9 January 1844 was the birthdate of his sister Rosilla. Among the papers in Isaiah=s pension file is a letter from the Chief of the Civil War Division in which he noted A It will be noticed he has grown an inch or more since enlistment. From all the evidence in the claim it is not believed he was eighteen years of age at enlistment.@
