Connell

James Connell (occasionally spelled McConnell) was born between 1775 and 1780. He was married circa 1800 to Jemima (B?B^[1]). Jemima was born circa 1779 in Maryland.^[2]

In 1820, James McConnell was living at Nottingham, Harrison County, Ohio. His household contained five individuals five individuals- two males under 10, one male aged 26 to 45 (James), one female under 10, and one female aged 26 to 45 (Jemima).^[3] James received land on 21 November 1820 in the Southwest 1/4 of Section 20, Range 12, Township 6 in Harrison County.

In 1830, James Connell was living in Stock township, Harrison County, Ohio. His household contained five individuals: one male aged 20 to 30, one male aged 60 to 70 (James), two females aged 10 to 15, and one female aged 50 to 60 (Jemima).^[4] Next door was Zedikiah Lewis, who married Connell=s daughter Isabella in 1829. On 1 March 1832, James Connel leased his farm to his son-in-law Zedekiah Lewis

In 1840, James McConnell was living at Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio. His household contained four individuals- one male aged 15 to 20, one male aged 50 to 60 (James), one female aged 10 to 15, and one female aged 50 to 60 (Jemima).^[5]

James appears to have died between 1840 and 1850. In 1850, Jemima is living with her daughter Elizabeth (McConnell) Molesworth in Nottingham, Harrison County, Ohio.^[6]

James and Jemima (B?B) McConnell were the parents of at least two children (Isabel and Lovina) and possibly five (if Elizabeth, John, and James are also children):

1. ELIZABETH CONNELL was born circa 1799/1800 in Ohio. Elizabeth was married to James Molesworth.

2. ISABEL CONNELL was born circa 1809 in Ohio. Isabel was married to Zedekiah Lewis.

3. Lovina CONNELL was born circa 1812 in Jefferson County, Ohio. Lovina was married to Samuel Leeper.

4. JOHN CONNELL was born circa 1800-1810. John was married to Margaret Lewis

5. JAMES CONNELL was married to Jane Auld.

SECOND GENERATION

Elizabeth Connell was born on 2 December 1799 in Ohio. Elizabeth was married on 21 September 1820 in Harrison County, Ohio to James Molesworth. James was born on 18 July 1791 in Maryland and died on 26 February 1866. He had been married first to Amelia Murray and had by her Henry, Augusta, and Sarah.

In 1830, the couple lived in Nottingham township, Harrison County, Ohio. Their household contained eight individuals: one male aged under 5, two males 5-10, one male 10-15, one male 30-40 (James), one female under 5, one female 10-15, and one female 20-30 (Elizabeth).^[7] Next door was the household of John Auld.

In 1840, the couple remained in Nottingham township. Their household contained nine individuals: one male under 5, one male 5-10, two males 10-15, one male 15-20, one male 40-50 (James), one female 10-15, one female 20-30, and one female 50-60 (Elizabeth).^[8] James Auld and John Auld lived within three households on the Molesworths.

On 26 August 1850, James and Elizabeth lived in Nottingham township, Harrison County, Ohio. James worked as a farmer and owned real estate valued at $3,000. Living with the couple were six of their children. Sons Ephraim and William were farming. The elder James and daughter Amelia could not read or write.^[9]

James (and probably) Elizabeth are buried in Molesworth Cemetery, Harrison County, Ohio.

James and Elizabeth (Connell) Molesworth were the parents of six children:^[10]

i. EPHRAIM3 MOLESWORTH was born on 2 May 1823 in Ohio.

ii. AMELIA MOLESWORTH was born on 9 August 1825 in Ohio.

iii. ALFRED MOLESWORTH was born on 26 January 1828 in Ohio.

iv. WILLIAM MOLESWORTH was born on 9 September 1830 in Ohio.

v. CONNELL MOLESWORTH was born circa 1833 and died on 19 July 1833 in Harrison County, Ohio.

vi. JAMES F. MOLESWORTH was born on 30 April1835 in Ohio.

vii. JOSHUA MOLESWORTH was born on 19 August 1837 in Ohio.

Isabelle Connell was born circa 1809 in Ohio. She was married by Justice of the Peace Robert Pittis on 22 July 1829 to Zedekiah Lewis.^[11] Zedekiah was born circa 1802/1803 in Virginia. In 1830, Zedekiah and Isabelle lived next door to Isabelle=s parents in Stock township, Harrison County, Ohio.^[12]

In 1840, the Lewis family lived in Mill township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio (page 325). Their household contained six individuals: one male under 5, one male 5-10, one male 20-30 (Zedekiah), one female under 5, one female 5-10, and one female 20-30 (Isabelle).^[13]

On 14 September 1850, the Lewis family was still in Mill township (page 609). Zedekiah was working as a farmer and son Benjamin as a laborer. Benjamin, Connell, Jemima, and Ruth were all in school.^[14]

In 1880, Isabel was living with Alex and Mary E. West in Urhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Isabel=s daughter Jemima was also living with her. The relationship of Isabel with the West and Johnson families is now yet known ^[15].

vi. MARY ELIZABETH LEWIS was born on 14 April 1845 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Lovina McConnell was born circa 1812 in Jefferson County, Ohio.^[16] She was married by Justice of the Peace Thomas M. Cranfel on 24 November 1833 in Harrison County, Ohio to Samuel Leeper.^[17] Samuel was born circa 1803 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.^[18]

In 1840, the couple lived in Stock township, Harrison County, Ohio. There were six individuals living in the household: one male under 5, one male 30-40 (Samuel), one female under 5, one female 5-10, one female 20-30 (Lavinia), and one female 60-70.^[19]

On 20 August 1850, Samuel and Lavinia were living in District No. 72, Harrison County, Ohio. There household contained the couple and their seven children: Jemima, Connel, Elizabeth, Wesley, Fletcher, Isabel, and Adaline M. Connel, Elizabeth, Wesley, and Fletcher were in school. Samuel worked as a stone and brick mason and he owned $400 in property.^[20]

Samuel and Lavinia (Connell) Leeper were the parents of seven children:

1. JEMIMA LEEPER was born circa 1834 in Harrison County, Ohio.

2. CONNEL LEEPER was born circa 1837 in Harrison County, Ohio.

3. ELIZABETH LEEPER was born circa 1839 in Harrison County, Ohio.

Tis indenture made and constructed the first day of March one thousand eight hundred & thirty two between James Connel of Harrison county and state of Ohio of the first part and Zedekiah Lewis of the county and state adoresaid of the second part. Witnesseth that the said party of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum a yearly [??? both [???]and against to & with the said party of the first part, his heirs, executors administrators or assigns to be paid and delivered [????] hath devised leased and let to farm and by these presents doth let and lease to farm with the party of the part all [??? ???] the southwest quarter of section twenty and range six and township twelve of land sold at Steubenville except the house he now resides in and the half of the yard [???] it- the house and the use of the spring, [???] Spring and one half the garden and the [???] and one half of the barn and the half of the barn yard and one third of all the pasture on the farm and a sufficient quantity firewood and timber for repairing the house and other buildings on the place and to take as much [???] coal as is needed for the use of his fire and [???] on the [???] for calves to the first of June in cook and every year and the party of the second part is to have [???] possession of the farm and the use and if heirs [???] as at [???] amd a;; the rest of the buildings not [?????] and the [???] farm and the [???] of the Second party is to work the farm in a good husband like manner as good husbandmen would do he is to keep the house and barn and all the numerous [???] farming on good order and to give them one third part [???] . [???] the [???] of any kind, wheat rye oats corn flax potatoes turnips [???] and buckwheat [???] the fruit that grows in the orchard the grain to be [???] on the shock the corn in the [???] the turnips and potatoes together [???] and the party of the second part is to put the wheat rye oats flax and buckwheat in the [???] or stack in [page 599] the same at the barn yearly and any year during the life of James Connel and Jemimy his wife and, also the one third third of all the hay that is maid on said farm to be put in the stack at the barn and the party of the second part is to pay the taxes [?] that is to be paid on said land and to keep it clear of incumbrances and is to have three years on all that on all the lands he shall claim [????] and then to pay the [???] of all [???] on said ground and if it should happen that the rents above named or any part thereof should not be paid and all other conditions of said article has not fulfilled [??] this month than and in that case it shall and maybe lawful for the party of the first part heirs or assigns to reenter the said premises and the same to have again reposes and enjoy as his or their first and former estate fully and [??] without any molestation or [???] whatsowever and if the said parties should both fulfill the [???] themself in that case the said party of the first part his heirs and assigns both agree to and with the party of the second part his heirs and assigns to [???] and [???] the same or caused to be conveyed the above quarter or [??] of land for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred dollars to be paid as [???] to wit fifty dollars in four years from the date of this article and fifty yearly and every year until it be fully paid unto the party of the first part , his heirs, his executors administrators or assigns and after the payment is fully paid agreeable to condition of said Article and the said party of the first part. Both agree to [??] with the party of the second part, that he his heirs or executors administrators or assigns will duly make or devise to be made a good and sufficient warrantee deed after the decease of the said James Conel and Jemimy his wife as soon as convenient can be done unto the said party of the second part his heirs executors or assigns in testimony whereof to the parties have hereunto let our hand & seal the day of the first above written in the presents of us. N. B. Possession to be given the first day of April AD 1832. Zedikiah Lewis releases all right, title, and interest to the SW 1/4 of Section 20, Range 6 Township 12 in Stubenville district to James Conel for $40, not including the grain in the ground which Lewis is to cut and give Conel 1/3 to be divided in the shock, and Lewis is to put Conel's share in the barn according to the said Conel's direction and is to have liberty to shock his one share in the barnyard and thereafter to thrash the same as needed. Lewis is to give personal possession of all of the aforesaid property to Conel the 1st day of April 1833 except the house he lives in, which he reserves to the middle of April. This contract agreed upon 9 March 1833. Witnesses were A--???? Auld and Thos. M. Granfell. Zedikiah Lewis acknowledged sale to Thos. M.
