LONG LAKE FAMILIES- "A" SURNAMES

 

ACKER

 

Andrew Acker was born in 1861/1862 In Illinois, son of Levi and Martha Acker[1]. In 1870, he and his family lived in Traverse twp[2]. Andrew died on 15 May 1881 and was buried in Linwood Cemetery[3]. The Grand Traverse Herald noted on 26 May 1881: Andrew Acker died on last Sunday week of consumption. His remains were buried at the Long Lake cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Cook at the Central school house.

 

Ella (Ellen?) M Acker was born in 1859/1860 in Illinois, daughter of Levi and Martha Acker (f=PA, m=NY).  She lived with her parents and brothers Andrew and Willard in Traverse twp in 1870[4]. In 1880, Ella was a house servant at Daniel and Maria Page's home in Long Lake twp[5].

  

ADAMS

 

John Adams was born in September 1837 in New York (parents=NY).  John was married around 1863 to Jane K. Jane was born in June 1839 in Michigan (parents=VT).  In 1900, the Adams farmed in Long Lake twp[6].

John Quincy Adams was born in November 1869 in Michigan, son of John and Jane Adams.  He was married around 1889/1890 to Lillian Carris. Lillian was born in November 1872 in Michigan (parents=NY). In 1900, the Adams owned a farm in Long Lake twp[7]. John and Lillie became members of the Friends Church in 1899 with Lillie resigning in 1904 and John transferring to the Traverse City in 1905[8]. In February 1900, a prayer meeting was held at the Adams home. Lillian visited Mr. Coffield with Estella Hammond in March. John put up ice from Coffield Lake in March 1900. Mrs. Adams mother visited her in September 1900[9].

 Children

 

i.              Gertrude Adams was born in June 1892 in Hartford, Michigan. She received an organ as a gift in November 1900[10]. Gertrude was married to Bernard Richardson.

ii.             Ruth Fern Adams was born on 20 November 1893 in Long Lake twp[11]..

iii.            Infant Adams was born on 13 February 1903 in Long Lake twp. This child died on 23 February 1904 in Long Lake twp. from a hemorrhage[12].

 

 AHRINS

 

Louis Ahrins was born in 1872/1873 in Indiana. In 1910, he was working as a herdsman for Fred Salinat in Long Lake twp[13].

 

ALLEN

 

Edward B. Allen was born in 1857 in New York. Edward was married prior to 1884 to Cora (Carey) M Laird. Cora was born in 1856/1862 (death certificate says 26 in 1888) in New York, daughter of James A and Susan Laird of Livingston Co., MI.

 

Ed was building a barn in August 1885. In the winter he worked lumbering jobs, hauling logs to the bay shore near Traverse City in January 1886. By March he had finished piling up his summer wood. Ed was also a well-known farmer: E. B. Allen has taken the forty acres owned by George Blade to work on shares, this being the second year he has worked it. He is putting in a large quantity of wheat and oats. He reported having nice corn in 1886 and 1887. Ed was cutting and hauling wood in the spring of 1887. He had jury duty that April. Ed sold his horse to someone in Traverse City in September 1887, promptly purchasing another from Mr. Brown. Allen Jenne worked for Ed in May 1888[14].

 

Friends and family frequently visited the Allens. Edward's sister, Miss S. E. Allen visited from Flint in August 1887. Cora's cousin Will Whitaker and wife came in March 1888. L. C. Buell, William Christy, C. H. Douglas and Jesse Shisler also visited.[15].

 

Cora became sick in early May 1888[16] and died on 10 May 1888 in Long Lake twp from measles[17].The Grand Traverse Herald reported on 17 May 1888: We are called to mourn the loss of a dear friend, Mrs. E. B. Allen, who has been called to her long and happy home. She was a faithful worker in the Sabbath school and a member of the M. E. church. She leaves with her many friends, a kind companion and two little children to mourn her loss.

 

Edward was busy collecting "tan bark" in August 1888. He was elected constable in 1889[18]. Edward died on 4 January 1934. Edward and Cora are buried in Linwood Cemetery[19].

 

Child

 

i.              Birdsall (Bert) E Allen was born on 17 May 1884 in Long Lake twp[20]. He died on 15 Jan. 1923 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery[21].

 

James Allen was born in 1814 in New York. James was a farmer. He died on 15 June 1891 in Long Lake twp from old age[22]. James is buried in Linwood Cemetery[23]. He was an uncle of Edward Allen.

 

 

ALLGAIRE

 

Frank Allgaire (also spelled Algire or Algiere) was born in 1815/1816 in Wurtemberg (or Prussia). Frank was married prior to 1859 in Grand Traverse Co. to Wilhelmina Sours. Wilhelmina was born in 1820/1821 in Prussia (dau of Joseph Sours?). The Allgaires lived first in Peninsula twp(?[24]) before moving to Long Lake twp. Frank received a land patent for 137.49 acres in section 2 on 1 November 1869. In 1870, Frank worked as a farmer while Wilhelma kept house. Their farm was worth $3000 with personal property worth $1500[25]. In 1879, Frank owned 340 acres in Long Lake twp[26]. In 1880, the family was still farming in Long Lake twp[27]. Frank was appointed a Long Lake twp constable in 1882. Frank died on 31 May 1891 in Long Lake twp from "Le grippe"[28]. Wilhelmia died on 28 April 1904 in Traverse City. The XXXXX reported:

 

                Mrs. Wilhelmia Algire died this morning about 11 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Shane, 147 East Eighth street, of old age. Deceased was 73 years of age and has lived with her daughter the past 10 years; her husband has been dead 13 years.

                Deceased leaves two daughters and two sons to mourn a mother's loss. They are Mrs. Shane of Eighth street, Mrs. Josie Bates of East Tenth street, Joseph Algire who lives 5 1/2 miles west of this city and Will Algier who lives three miles beyond Bates. The funeral service will be held Monday from St. Francis church under the direction of H. L. Carter[29].

 i.              Josephine Allgaire was born in 1858/1859 in Michigan. Josie was married to XXXX Bates

iii.            Joseph M Allgire was born on 2 June 1863 in Peninsula twp. G.T. Co[30]. Joe was building himself a house in July 1885. He or his father owned a threshing machine which they rented to other farmers. He was cutting pine in January 1892[31].

iv.            Sarah B Allgaire was born in 1864/1867 in Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. Sarah was married to Thomas Shane.

v.             William Allgaire was born 2 May 1868 in Long Lake twp[32].

 

 

William Allgaire was born 2 May 1868 in Long Lake twp, son of Frank and Wilhelmina Sours Allgaire. He was married to Lizzie.

 Child

 i.              Female Allgaire was born on 17 March 1894 (or 22 April 1894?) in Long Lake twp[33]. The child died on 22 April 1894 from congestion of the lungs[34].

ii.             Marguerite Allgaire was born on 6 or 7 August 1901. She died on 1 September 1901 (24 days old) from cholera infantum in Traverse City[35].

 

 

ALSBACK

 

XXXX Alsback was born in Pennsylvania. He was married to Lizzie L. Fanning. She was born in 1865 in New York, daughter of George and Harriet Fanning (f=NY, m=PA). In 1920, the Alsback family lived in Long Lake twp[36]. Walter worked as a oil company truck driver and Carl worked as a draftsman. Grandson Robert Alsback (born in 1915 in PA) was living with the family.

 

Children

 

i.              Walter Alsback was born in November 1887 in Pennsylvania[37]. Walter was working as a farm laborer on his grandfather's farm in Long Lake twp in 1920[38].

ii.             Carl Alsback was born in February 1890 in New York.

iii.            Gordon Alsback was born in 1897/1898 in New York.

 

ANDERSON

 

A. J. Anderson was born in 1851/1852 in Sweden. He worked at a sawmill in Long Lake twp. in 1880. The census taker noted that Anderson had been hurt in a mill accident[39].

 

ARNOLD

 

George Arnold was born in 1838/1839 in Baden, Germany. George was married on 14 December 1868 at Long Lake to Lena (or Helen) Leit. Lena was born in 1849/1850 in Canada, probably daughter of William and Catherine Leit. Valmore G Boynton, minister, performed the service, which was witnessed by S F Hall of Long Lake and Fred Fages (?) of Elmwood[40].

 George worked as a farmer in 1870 with the family property worth $1000 and personal possessions worth $100[41]. George lived in Solon in 1883, when he was reported to have fallen and broken his arm[42]. He built himself a barn in 1885. George was appointed a moderator for School district No. 3 in 1887[43].

 Child

 i.              Susan Arnold was born 9 January 1870 in Long Lake twp[44].

 

 ATKINSON

 Adelbert J Atkinson was born in March 1872 in Michigan, son of John and Emma Agnes Duryea Atkinson. Adelbert was married on 14 January 1894 in Grand Traverse Co. to Laura Stratton. The ceremony was performed by James M Elliot, Justice of the Peace, and was witnessed by E L and Verna Elliot of Long Lake twp[45]. Laura was born in 1874/1876 in Indiana. She was living in Benzie Co. at the time of the marriage and was engaged in domestic labor. Adelbert was farming at that time. Adelbert and Laura were apparently divorced. In 1910, Adelbert was married around 1905 to Anna. Anna was born in 1886/1887 in Iowa.  They were living in 1910 with Adelbert's brother John Franklin Atkinson in Long Lake twp, where Adelbert worked as a laborer[46]. Laura was later married to David Stewart.

 

George R. Atkinson was born in March 1868 in New York (parents also born in NY).  George bought a new cutter in December 1890[47]. George was married to Winifred E. Hendricks of Traverse City in July 1891[48]. Winifred was born in September 1872 in Michigan, daughter of Hugh and Charity Hendricks.  George worked as a farmer in Long Lake twp. in 1900, owning his farm[49]. George died on 3 April 1905 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake twp[50].

i.              Lillian Belle Atkinson was born in February 1893 in Michigan.

ii.             Jessie Ralph Atkinson was born in June 1894 in Michigan.

iii.            Gladys S. Atkinson was born in January 1896 in Michigan.

iv.            Everett D Atkinson was born7 Feb 1897 in Long Lake twp[51].

v.             Leonard Atkinson was born on 11 May 1900 in Long Lake twp[52].

vi.            Atkinson was born and died prior to 1900.

 

John  Franklin (Frank) Atkinson was born in August 1870 in New York, son of John and Emma Agnes Duryea Atkinson.  Frank bought a new cutter in December 1890. He was a chorister at the M. E. Sabbath school in June 1892[53]. He was married on 24 July 1897 in Burdickville to Grace Maud West.  Howard Moore, pastor of the Friend's Church performed the ceremony, which was witnessed by Frank West and Bertha Wheelock[54]. Grace was born in 1879/1880 in Michigan, daughter of Theodore and Theda Thayer West. Frank was a member of the Friends church from 1891 to 1900[55]. In 1900, John was a laborer and the family lived in a rented house in Long Lake twp. In 1910, the family owned a farm in Long Lake twp[56].  John died on 18 October 1925 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake twp[57]. Grace was married to XXXXX Rice and died on 28 March 1942 at Clearwater, Kalkaska Co., MI. She is buried in Linwood Cemetery[58].

 Children

 i.              Bernice M Atkinson was born in February 1898 in Michigan.

ii.             Mildred M Atkinson was born on 23 June 1900 in Long Lake twp[59].

iii.            Jessie F Atkinson was born on 3 October 1901 in Long Lake twp[60].

iv.            Francis A Atkinson was born on 5 April 1903 in Long Lake twp[61]. Francis died on 2 March 1905  from acute dysentary in Long Lake twp[62]. Francis is buried in Linwood Cemetery[63].

v.             Percy Roosevelt Atkinson was born on 15 January 1906 in Long Lake twp[64].

vi.            Emma M Atkinson was born in 1908/1909 in Michigan.

vii.           Maud Atkinson was born and died on 8 Dec. 1917[65]. Maud is buried in Linwood Cemetery.

viii.          Mabel Atkinson was born and died on 9 Dec. 1917[66]. Mabel is buried in Linwood Cemetery[67].

 

John J Atkinson was born on 2 March 1841 in Michigan, son of Ralph and Isabel Scott Atkinson (parents=NY).  John served in Company I of the 9th New York Cavalry in the Civil War from September 1861 to July 1865[68]. John Atkinson supposedly moved to the Long Lake area in the 1860s[69]. John was married around 1867 to Agnes Emma Duryea.  Agnes was born on 11 January 1849 in New York, daughter of Peter Duryea and Eliza Van Blarcum.  In 1880, the Atkinsons lived on a farm in Long Lake twp[70]. John (nicknamed Jesse) lost a horse and a milch cow in 1884[71].

 In 1900, the Atkinson's owned their farm in Long Lake twp[72]. Emma died on 14 April 1901.  The Evening Record reported on 15 April 1901 (page 1):

 Death of a Pioneer

                Mrs. Emma Atkinson died very suddenly yesterday of heart trouble at her home in Long Lake township at the age of 52 years. She was the wife of John J. Atkinson, a veteran of the civil war, and had been a resident of the county for a quarter of a century. The funeral will occur from the Friends church at 2 o'clock, under the direction of H. L. Carter.

 In 1910, John lived by himself while continuing to farm[73]. John died on 13 January 1913 in Long Lake twp from "cardiac insufficiency"[74]. An obituary appear in the 14 January 1913 edition of the Record Eagle (page 4):

 JOHN J. ATKINSON

Early Grand Traverse Settler Has Passed Away

                John J. Atkinson, aged 72 years, one of the earliest settlers in this part of the country, died at the home of his son, Frank Atkinson, at Long Lake, last night. Mr. Atkinson had been in poor health for more than a year past and had been confined to his bed but a short while. Forty years ago he came to this region from New York state, where he was born, and he had lived here ever since. He was a farmer and highly respected by all who knew him throughout the region.

                Besides Frank, there is one other son, A.P. Atkinson, of Oklahoma, and funeral arrangements will not be made until he arrives or can be heard from.

 

The Atkinsons are buried in Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake twp[75].

iii.            Adelbert J Atkinson was born in March 1872 in Michigan.

  

ATTENGER

 Mable Attenger was born in May 1864 in Michigan (f=CAN, m=GER). In 1900, Mable was working as a servant for Stephen and Jane McGeary while going to school in Long Lake twp[76]. Mable's brother Albert Attenger was born in October 1888 in Michigan. He was going to school while working as a servant for Frank and Sarah Kratchovil[77].

 

ATWELL

 Calvin Atwell was born in 1822/1823 in New York.  He was married prior to 1854 to Sylvia M.  Sylvia was born in 1829/1830 in Ohio.  The Atwells lived in Indiana around 1854 and in Iowa in 1861.  They moved to Michigan between 1861 and 1868.  The Atwells were early pioneers of Long Lake twp[78]. In 1870, the Atwell farm was worth $1500 and their personal possessions were valued at $400[79].

 Children

 i.              Alvin Atwell was born in 1863/1864 in Indiana.

ii.             John Atwell was born in 1860/1861 in Iowa.

iii.            Frank Arthur Atwell was born on 28 April 1868 in Long Lake twp[80].

 

 AYRES

 William Ayres was born in 1871/1872 in England. He emigrated in 1872. In 1910, Ayres was a farm manager in Long Lake twp[81].

  

AYLARD

 George Aylard was born in 1857/1858 in Ohio (parents=ENG). In 1880, Aylard was living with Miles and Lavinia Johnson and working as a laborer[82]. Aylard and Johnson were partners and sold their farm to J. R. Cox for $1,400 in February 1883. They had been buying fat cattle and sheep and butchering them. In early March 1883, George moved to Ohio with Mrs. Johnson and her children, with Miles Johnson following shortly afterward[83].
