JOHN SAWYER PRICE

      John Sawyer Price (b. 11 March 1799, Knox?  Co., TN d. 17 April 1880, Hagarville, Johnson Co. AR) was the fifth child (of 13) born to Reuben Price (b. 1756, Shenandoah? VA d. 1821, Warren/Coffee Co?, TN) and Dorothy "Dolly" Cody (b. 1769, VA d. 12 June 1849, Hillsboro, Coffee Co. TN).  He served in the War of 1812 for 2 months (September 28, 1814 to March 27, 1815); traveled from McMinneville to Warren Co, TN, place of residence, to Fayetteville in Lincoln Co, where mustered into service.

      As one of the first settlers on the Illinois Bayou above Dover (ref.  Early History of Pope County), he came into Arkansas Territory in 1828 from Jackson Co, AL with his first wife, Prudence Langford (b. 19 March 1802 d. ca 1830-32) daughter of Benjamin Langford and Martha "Patsy" Pace.  The exact place and date of their marriage has not been confirmed, but it is believed they married in Jackson Co, AL ca. 1820.  John Sawyer is listed on the Crawford County Tax List 1829 and on the Pope County Tax Lists until 1837, when he appears on the Johnson County List.  He lived in Johnson County until his death in 1880.  His name is found in the Territorial Papers, Arkansas Territory (September 12, 1835) as a petitioner for the establishment of a mail route in Pope Co.

      John Sawyer fathered six children from his first marriage: 1) believed to be Sarah (b. ca. 1821, AL d. ca. 1845, AR) m. George W. Shelby.  Probate Bk. C, p. 59, 1845, Johnson Co, AR contains a petition by John S. Price against George W. Shelby for the sum of $4 allowed in the estate of Sarah Shelby, deceased. (2) believed to be Barton (b. ca. 1822, AL d?).  Although family tradition indicates he may not have survived to adulthood, one T.B. Price was listed among the "Golden Army of the '50's; (3) Auger (b. 13 Feb. 1823, AL d. 4 Sept. 1898, Whitt, Parker Co, TX) M Caroline __ b. AL; m. Rebecca Brown, b. AL m. Hulda F. Tierce, b. S.C. (18 known children); (4) Eveline (b. 6 Feb. 1825, AL d. 26 Apr. 1862, Johnson Co, AR) m. John Caleb Carey (8 children); (5) Mandy I. (b. 20 Feb. 1828, AR d?); (6) Nancy C. (b. 2 Mar. 1830, AR d?).

      On 19 August 1832, John Sawyer Price married his second wife, Elizabeth Chapman Williams (b. 22 Apr. 1814, TN d 9 Nov. 1894, Johnson Co, AR).  Her parents are unknown.  They married in Pope County (Bk. A, p. 10).  From this marriage, 8 children were born: (1) Dolly C. (b. 3 June 1833 d. 4 Sept 1833); (2) Martha S. (b. 22 July 1834 d?) m. John farmer (6 children) (3) John Ruben (b. 1839 d. 27 Apr. 1920) m Susan Elizabeth Blackard; m Sallie B. Simpson; m Tina Watts Blackard 9 children); (4) William C. (b. 1843 d.16 Oct. 1862, Civil War); (5) Elizabeth Ann (b. 20 Aug. 1846 d. 24 Oct.,1873) m. James Lewis Farmer, bro. of Dan Farmer (5 children); (6) Pleasant Alford (b. 13 June 1849 d. 13 July 906) m Susan Elizabeth Farmer, sister of John and James; m Mary Lucindie "Mollie" Leavell (13 children); (7) Richard M. (b. 1853 d. 1875) m. Martha Francis Roop (1 son); (8) Thomas J. (b. 6 Aug. 1855 d. 21 Aug. 1875).  The last will & testament of John Sawyer Price is recorded on pp. 124-26 Bk.  B in the Johnson County Courthouse and was probated on May 3, 1880.  John Sawyer left 275 acres in Johnson County, Township Ten, Range Twenty-Two, to his sons and grandsons.  This land, which he had accumulated during his lifetime, was referred to as "Pricetown" by local residents.  Many of the current residents in the Hagarville, Russellville and Dover areas are descendants of this original

John Sawyer Price                                                     b. 1799 Tennessee, Came to Illinois Bayou in 1828 or 29 with his father-in-law, Benjamin Langford, from Alabama.  There were four sons-in-law: (can't recall the other names).  When Benj. Langford died, John Sawyer moved to Johnson Co., (about 1840).  He had married a second time in Pope Co., (1832) to Elizabeth Chapman Williams.  They had 8 children.  The sons lived near the father, John Sawyer.  As a result, the land was known as Pricetown.  There is a family cemetery called 'Pricetown" outside Hagarville in Johnson County.

Prudence LANGFORD (MARTHA PATSY PACE, JOHN, FRANCIS, RICHARD, JAMES, RICHARD, GEORGE, RICHARD) was born March 18, 1802 in South Carolina, and died 1832 in Arkansas. She married John H. PRICE 1820, son of Rueben PRICE and Dorothy CODY. He was born 1802 in Alabama, and died Unknown.
