The Cape Cod Baxters

This is not a branch of my Baxter lineage. I have included it as a service to other folks researching the Baxter surname. IF someone ever makes a connection between this branch and any of the other Baxter branches, please contact me.

Before you start searching for your ancestor, perhaps a suggestion or reminder might be in order to assist you. It would probably be easier and faster to look for your ancestor using the included search program.

The Descendants of Captain Thomas Baxter

Generation One

1. Captain Thomas1 Baxter married Temperance Gorham, daughter of John Gorham and Desire Howland, on 27 Jan 1679. He died on 22 Jun 1713.

2. Thomas2 Baxter (Thomas1). Thomas Baxter married Mary Lattimer of Wethersfield, Conn. on 3 May 1705. He married Hannah Crowell.

There were no children of Thomas2 Baxter and Hannah Crowell.

3. John2 Baxter (Thomas1) was born in 1685 at Mass. He married Desire Gorham, daughter of Joseph Gorham and Sarah Sturgis, on 11 Jun 1706 at Mass. He died in 1749 at Mass.

Children of John2 Baxter and Desire Gorham were as follows:

4. Shubal2 Baxter (Thomas1) was born in 1687. He married Elizabeth Gorham; A widow at the time she married Shubal. He died on 12 Apr 1741.

Generation Three

5. Timothy3 Baxter (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 26 Feb 1705/6 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. He married Sarah Kilborn on 14 Jul 1726 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. He died on 18 Apr 1777 at age 71. He was buried on 18 Apr 1777 at First Congregational Church, Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut; at age 73.

6. Thomas3 Baxter (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 17 Dec 1710. He married Zilpha Nickerson on 8 Nov 1740.

7. Cornelius3 Baxter (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 30 Nov 1712. He married Dorcas Gage on 11 Feb 1737. He married Joanna Merchant in 1747.

There were no children of Cornelius3 Baxter and Dorcas Gage.

He enlisted (and served three years,) between 1775 and 1780, entered service from Yarmouth, served under Lieut. Josiah Miller, of Capt. John Lemont's company, Col. Bradford's regiment, Massachusetts Line; discharged at Westpoint by Col. Bradford. He was at the storming of Stony Point and in taking Burgoyne, and also in New Jersey at the battle of Monmouth.

8. Leah3 Baxter (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 17 Dec 1715. She married (--?--) Berry.

9. Malachi3 Baxter (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 30 Apr 1718. He married Thankful Kelly on 18 Mar 1738.

His enlisted in February, 1777, for three years, in Capt. John Russell's company, Col. Bradford's regiment, Massachusetts Line; served out his enlistment, and was discharged at West Point, in February, 1780; was at the capture of Burgoyne and the Monmouth battle.

10. Joseph3 Baxter (John2, Thomas1) was born on 3 Mar 1715. Joseph Baxter married Hannah North of Barnstable, Mass on 15 Nov 1747.

11. Isaac3 Baxter (John2, Thomas1) was born on 12 Jan 1717. He married Abigail Taylor on 21 Feb 1744 Date of their marriage is given as 12 Feb. 1744 on page 36 of Joseph Nickerson's book.

Children of Isaac3 Baxter and Abigail Taylor were as follows:

12. Hezekiah3 Baxter (John2, Thomas1) was born on 21 Mar 1720. Hezekiah Baxter married Deborah Nickerson of Harwich, Mass on 21 Apr 1743. He married Thankful Merchant on 4 Oct 1758.

13. Shubal3 Baxter (John2, Thomas1) was born on 21 Dec 1726. Shubal Baxter married Mehitable Hallet of Barnstable, Mass. J. N. Baxter also gives the date of their marriage as 17 March 1746 on 5 Mar 1746.

Children of Shubal3 Baxter and Mehitable Hallet were as follows:

14. Richard3 Baxter (Shubal2, Thomas1) was born on 6 Jul 1716. Richard Baxter married Jane Baxter of Barnstable, Mass. J. N. Baxter also gives a date January 1733 for this event on page 35 of his book. They were unrelated as far as I can tell from the data available. (GFC comment) on 11 Apr 1734. Mary Coffin married Richard Baxter of Nantucket, Mass in 1775.

There were no children of Richard3 Baxter and Mary Coffin.

Generation Four

15. John4 Baxter (Timothy3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 28 Dec 1725 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. Joseph Nickerson Baxter gives the year of birth as 1726. He was baptized on 26 Mar 1732 at First Congregational Church, Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut; Baptized with his sisters Honor and Martha. He died on 13 Nov 1813 at Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Mass, at age 87; The month and day are given in the data source but not the year. It also states he died at 88. The year is a WAG that apparently fits the other data points. [GFC comment]. He was buried at New Hartford Road Cemetery, Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Mass; This is probably the John Baxter mentioned in the Boston Transcript Cemetery data who died at age 88. No dates are given but it roughly parallels the other burial data in this record. [GFC comment].

16. Elisha4 Baxter (Timothy3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 29 Oct 1732 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was baptized on 3 Dec 1732 at First Congregational Church, Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. He married Honor Walcott on 13 Dec 1756 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut; Joseph Nickerson Baxter's book on page 37 gives the brides name as H. Woolwich and on page 45 as Honor Woolcott, both with the same date as the Barbour Collection source. He died on 2 Aug 1804 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, at age 71; age 74.

17. Mehitable4 Baxter (Timothy3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 25 May 1740 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. She was baptized on 1 Jun 1740 at First Congregational Church, Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. She married Camp Addams on 13 Dec 1759 at First Congregational Church, Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.

Children of Mehitable4 Baxter and Camp Addams were:

18. Benjamin4 Baxter (Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 20 Sep 1741. Benjamin Baxter married Elizabeth Ryder on 15 Aug 1765 at Harwich, Barnstable County, Mass. He died on 17 Oct 1812 at age 71.

Children of Benjamin4 Baxter and Elizabeth Ryder were as follows:

19. Rueben4 Baxter (Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 2 May 1745. He married Elizabeth Crowell on 31 Oct 1765. He died on 14 Aug 1813 at age 68.

Children of Rueben4 Baxter and Elizabeth Crowell were as follows:

20. Barnabas4 Baxter (Cornelius3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 13 Jan 1758. He married Catherine Bearse in 1787; On page 47, Mr. Baxter spells her surname as Bearn. He married Mercy Blatchford in 1791.

There were no children of Barnabas4 Baxter and Catherine Bearse.

21. David4 Baxter (Cornelius3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 15 Apr 1767. He married Mercy Baker on 23 Oct 1788; Date of their marriage is given as October 28, 1788 on page 48 of Joseph Nickerson's book. (GFC comment).

Children of David4 Baxter and Mercy Baker were as follows:

22. Malachi4 Baxter (Malachi3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 19 Jun 1743. He was born in 1748; calculated from his pension application. (GFC comment). He married Rhoda Mantor on 24 Apr 1777 at Tisbury, Dukes County, Mass. He died on 17 Jul 1835 at Tisbury, Dukes County, Mass, at age 92.

In July, 1775, he enlisted in Capt. Edward Hammond's company in the First Regiment, then commanded by Col. (Gen.) Warren; that he was in the battle of Bunker Hill, where his colonel was killed, and he lost the sight of one eye, and was wounded in the foot, continuing to serve for two and one-half years; was at last in the Fourth Regiment Massachusetts Line, Col. Wm. Shepard, and was discharged at West Point. Was in the battle on Rhode (?) Island; "only pushed bayonets there for four hours and can now show three wounds."

23. Winnifred4 Baxter (Joseph3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 5 Sep 1750. She married David Baxter, son of Isaac Baxter and Abigail Taylor, on 23 Dec 1770; They were first cousins.

24. John4 Baxter (Joseph3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 16 Apr 1754 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Mass. John Baxter married Reliance Ewers at Barnstable, Barnstable County, Mass. He died on 7 Oct 1831 at Winslow, Kennebec County, Maine, at age 77.

He was rev war He enlisted January, 1776, for one year, upon the Continental establishment, in Capt. John Grannis's company of Col. Bradford's Mass. regiment, but more immediately under command of Lieut. Col. Bassett; was discharged and paid off at Boston, December, 1776 in 1776.

25. Joseph4 Baxter (Joseph3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 11 May 1766. He married Desire Taylor on 18 Mar 1793.

26. David4 Baxter (Isaac3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 14 Feb 1745. He married Winnifred Baxter, daughter of Joseph Baxter and Hannah North, on 23 Dec 1770; They were first cousins.

27. Isaac4 Baxter (Isaac3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 29 Aug 1747. He married Lydia Linnell on 31 Mar 1785.

28. Taylor4 Baxter (Isaac3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 24 Jun 1758. He married Sarah Crowell on 16 Jun 1774.

29. Ebenezer4 Baxter (Hezekiah3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 17 Sep 1761 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Mass. He married Elizabeth Burgess in 1787.

37. Major Obed5 Baxter (Rueben4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 12 Sep 1774 at Dennis, Barnstable County, Mass. He married Mary "Polly" Howes. He died on 5 Dec 1845 at age 71.

47. Alpheus6 Baxter (Zilpha5, Benjamin4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 26 Nov 1808. He married Martha Robbins on 9 Jan 1831 at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. He married Ruth Kelly on 20 Feb 1858; On page 58, Mr. Baxter gives her name as Ruth Crowell.

48. Obed6 Baxter Jr. (Obed5, Rueben4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 3 Dec 1797. He married Mercy Baker. He married Lovey Kelly. He died in 1862.

51. John6 Baxter (Obed5, Winnifred4, Joseph3, John2, Thomas1) was born on 19 Apr 1825 at Hyannis, Barnstable County, Mass. John Baxter married Eleanor Nickerson of Dennis, Mass on 24 Jul 1850. John Baxter married Jennie L. Child of Hoboken, Otsego County, New York in 1860. He died on 1 Jun 1864 in the sinking of the "Pocahontas" off Cape Hatteras at age 39.
