GFC]. He married Elizabeth Orton in 1835 at White Pigeon, Saint Joseph County, Michigan. He died in 1862 at Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan.

Children of Levi4 Baxter and Lois Johnson were as follows:

Before the Civil War Henry organized at his home in Michigan the Jonesville "light Guards." He entered the war as a captain, was commissioned colonel in 1862 and brigadier-general of volunteers in 1863, and was mustered out of the army in 1865 with the brevet of major general of volunteers. References to his activities are numerous in the annals of the Army of the Potomac. (Longstreet, Manassas to Appomattox, 1896, speaks of Baxter's command composed of volunteers for that act, as crossing the Rappahannock River under fire, shortly before the battle of Fredericksburg, an action which has been characterized as a "brilliant exploit.")

As General Lee was leading his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania, the Union Army was trying to follow him northward while at the same time shielding the cities of Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. The two armies closed together somewhat unintentionally at Gettysburg. When the Union Cavalry scouts encountered the southerners just west of Gettysburg on July 1st, the battle slowly started. The I Corps under Gen. John Reynolds was rushed up to Gettysburg from their positions at Fairfield, Pennsylvania (a distance of six miles) to support the cavalry troops.

At Gettysburg, Gen. Baxter commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division under Brig. Gen. John C. Robinson in the I Corps commanded by Gen. John Reynolds. When a sniper at the beginning of the battle killed Reynolds, Gen. Abner Doubleday took command until relieved by Gen. John Newton.

That first day was basically a defeat for the Union forces as they were forced to fall back through the town to defensive positions south of Gettysburg. However, during this initial phase of the battle, Gen. Baxter's Brigade took about 1000 rebel prisoners; he captured nearly all of the Confederate brigade commanded by Iverson.

The fight was very bloody as both sides took heavy losses. After being battered and hammered to pieces for hours, Baxter's 2nd Brigade retreated about 4 in the afternoon through the town to the hills just south of Gettysburg. By taking the heavy losses during the day, they helped to provide time for the army to prepare positions on Cemetery Hill. The shattered remnants of I Corps were essentially no longer an effective fighting force and thus they were dispersed among the other Corps. Baxter's Brigade was stationed on Cemetery Ridge near the junction of the three roads running south out of Gettysburg; the Baltimore, Taneytown, and Emmitsburg Roads.

On the second day of battle, July 2nd, General Sickles's III Corps had gotten themselves into trouble with an exposed salient position on the Emmitsburg Turnpike. Baxter's brigade was sent to support their withdrawal. At dusk when the salient was pulled back into line on Cemetery Ridge, Baxter's brigade returned to their original positions.

On the last day of fighting, July 3rd, they partook in perhaps the most famous charge in American military history, Pickett's charge against the center of the Union line that was the turning point of the war. The climax of Pickett's charge was an infantry fight pure and simple. It was fought out with unremitting fury. Some of Pickett's men broke in across the stone wall and knelt amid Cushing's idle guns to fire point-blank at the defending infantry. Some of the defenders found the fire too hot to bear and withdrew on a narrow front, and for the moment, Pickett's men had actually broken the Union line. If they had been able to widen the break and hold on to the ground gained until help came, they would have won the battle. As it was, of the 15,000 brave men who had marched up the hill, only 5,000 returned.

Nowadays a visitor can stand by the clump of trees and see the whole battlefield, and it is hard to realize that hardly anything was visible to the men who were doing the fighting. This battle was fought in a blinding fog - a choking, reeking, impenetrable mist of powder smoke - smoke from the cannon and from the infantry rifles - lying close to the ground and drifting up toward the sky until some breeze might carry it away. Directly to the west of the focal point of the battle Lee himself watched and could see nothing - just an occasional glimpse of tossing flags and stabbing flames when the smoke would thin out temporarily. Longstreet ordered a brigade forward to reinforce Pickett, and the men could not see their objective because of the smoke clouds; they drifted far off to the right, came up against a waiting rank of Federal cannon and the spirited Vermonters, and were torn apart and compelled to retreat without having had the slightest effect on the course of the battle.

In the final campaigns of 1864-65 under Grant, his brigade formed part of the 5th Army Corps under Gen. Warren. He was desperately wounded at Antietam and again at Fredericksburg, and a third time at the Wilderness, where two horses were shot under him, but recovered in time to serve in the closing battle of Five Forks. His brevet cited his gallantry and services at the Wilderness, Dabney's Mill, and Five Forks.
