The Descendants of Gregory Baxter  ( ? - 1659)

Generation One

1. Gregory¹ Baxter. Gregory Baxter married Margaret Paddy of Plymouth, Mass. He died on 21 Jun 1659.

He emigrated in 1630 probably from Rowton, England in Winthrop's fleet.[ If truly from Rowton then probably some relation to the Connecticut Baxter family IF the ancestry given by Hon. J. P. Baxter turns out to be correct. (GFC Comment) ].

Generation Two

2. Bethulia or Bethia² Baxter (Gregory¹) was born in Jun 1632. She married Samuel Dearing.

• i. Bethia³; born 6 Aug 1649.

3. Abigail² Baxter (Gregory¹) was born in Sep 1634 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Colony. She married Joseph Adams, son of Henry Adams, on 29 Nov 1650 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Mass.. Date is also given as Nov. 26, 1650. She died on 27 Aug 1692 at age 57. She was buried at Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass.

Children of Abigail² Baxter and Joseph Adams were as follows:

• i. Hannah³; born 13 Nov 1652; married Samuel Savil 10 Apr 1672.

• xii. Mehitabel; born 23 Nov 1673; married Thomas White 21 Jul 1697.

4. John² Baxter (Gregory¹) was born on 1 Dec 1639 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Colony. John Baxter married Hannah White of Weymouth.[Someone has annotated Joseph Nickerson Baxter's book to give the month of birth as November. (GFC Comment)]. He died on 21 Apr 1719 at age 79. He died on 29 Apr 1719 at age 79.

Children of John² Baxter and Hannah White were as follows:

• 6. i. Hannah³, born 6 May 1661; married Joseph Dyer; married Joseph Morse.
• ii. John; born 28 Oct 1663; died 23 May 1666 at age 2 of croup.
• 7. iii. John, born 14 Feb 1667; married Huldah Hayward.
• iv. Thomas; died 7 Jan 1693; of consumption.
• 8. v. Samuel, married Mary Beals; married Deborah Brackett.
• 9. vi. Rev. Joseph, born 4 Jun 1676 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Mass; married Mary Fiske; married widow Rebecca Saffin; married Mrs. Mercy Bridgeman.

Generation Three

5. Joseph³ Adams (Abigail²Baxter, Gregory¹) was born on 24 Dec 1654. He married Mary Chapin. He married Hannah Bass, daughter of John Basse and Ruth Alden, in 1688.

There were no children of Joseph³ Adams and Mary Chapin.

Children of Joseph³ Adams and Hannah Bass were:

• 10. i. John⁴, married Susanna Boylston.

6. Hannah³ Baxter (John², Gregory¹) was born on 6 May 1661. Hannah Baxter married Joseph Dyer of Weymouth. Hannah Baxter married Joseph Morse of Sherburne, Mass. She died on 19 Sep 1726 at age 65.

Children of Hannah³ Baxter and Joseph Dyer were as follows:

• i. Benjamin⁴.
• ii. John.
• iii. Thomas.

There were no children of Hannah³ Baxter and Joseph Morse.

7. John³ Baxter (John², Gregory¹) was born on 14 Feb 1667. He married Huldah Hayward, daughter of Jonathan Hayward, on 24 Jan 1695; Year is also given as 1693. He died on 21 Mar 1747 at age 80.

Children of John³ Baxter and Huldah Hayward all born at Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass, were as follows:

• i. Hannah⁴; born 27 Apr 1696; married John Hayward 6 Mar 1729. John was from Mendon, Mass. and Hannah from Braintree, Mass. according to the church records of their marriage.
• 11. ii. John, born 10 Jan 1698; married Mehitable Willard.
• 12. iii. Jonathan, born 1699; married Mary Thompson.
• iv. Josiah; born 29 Dec 1701; died young.
• v. Huldah; born 3 Jun 1702; married Samuel Cleverly 14 Mar 1728.
• 13. vi. Gregory, born 14 Feb 1706; married Mary Wilson.
• vii. Sarah; born 1711; baptized 20 May 1711; married Benjamin Cleverly 14 Jan 1728.
• viii. Mary; born 26 Jan 1719; married (--?--) Allen.

8. Samuel³ Baxter (John², Gregory¹) married Mary Beals on 3 Jun 1697; J. N. Baxter also quotes church records that give the date of their marriage as "3,4,1697" which I would interpret as 4 March 1697. (GFC comment)

The church records also states they both were residents of Braintree and married by Rec. L. M. Fiske. He married Deborah Brackett on 19 Jan 1713. He died circa 1744.

Children of Samuel³ Baxter and Mary Beals were as follows:

• i. Samuel⁴; born 1 Aug 1698; died 21 Mar 1714 at age 15.
• 14. ii. Benjamin, born 3 Feb 1700; married Abigail Beals.
• iii. Thomas; born 25 Feb 1702; married Deliverance Marshall Nov 1724.
• iv. Joseph; born 21 Jan 1706.
• v. Barnabas; born 1 Mar 1707; died 9 May 1721 at age 14; Has a gravestone in Quincy, Mass.
• vi. Paul; born 26 Aug 1709; Paul Baxter married Jane Collins of Hull, Mass 5 Aug 1730; died at Boston, Suffolk County, Mass.

Children of Samuel³ Baxter and Deborah Brackett were as follows:

• ii. (--?--); born; twins of unknown sex; died; died young.
• iii. Samuel; born 11 Jul 1715; married Lydia Rawson 23 Apr 1761; died 21 Feb 1777 at age 61; buried at Quincy burying-ground, Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass.
• iv. Charles; born 25 Apr 1717; married Mary S. (--?--); died circa 1789.
• v. Deborah; born 30 Aug 1722.

9. Rev. Joseph³ Baxter (John², Gregory¹) was born on 4 Jun 1676 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Mass. He was baptized on 11 Jun 1676 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Mass, by the Rev. Mr. Moses Fisk. Rev. Joseph Baxter married Mary Fiske of Braintree, Mass on 16 Sep 1697. He married widow Rebecca Saffin on 26 Jun 1712. He married Mrs. Mercy Bridgeman on 21 Feb 1715. He died on 2 May 1745 at age 68.

Children of Rev. Joseph³ Baxter and Mary Fiske were as follows:

• i. Joseph⁴; born 11 Feb 1699; baptized 18 Feb 1699; died 29 Feb. 1699.
• ii. Mary; born 16 Feb 1700; baptized 16 Feb 1700; Mary Baxter married Rev. Mr. John Gardner of Stow, Mass 14 Apr 1720.
• iii. Sarah; born 21 Aug 1702; baptized 23 Aug 1702; Sarah Baxter married Captain Thomas Buckminster of Framingham, Mass 1 Mar 1721; died Jul 1745 at age 42.
• iv. Hannah; born 15 Jul 1704; baptized 16 Jul 1704; Hannah Baxter married Rev. Mr. Oliver Peabody of Natick, Mass 9 May 1723.
• v. Joseph; born 14 May 1706; baptized 19 May 1706; died 1732; He is referred to in the letters of john Penhallow as a missionary to the Indians; died Dec 1732 at Dublin, Ireland, of small pox.
• 15. vi. John, born 2 May 1708; married Rebecah Fisher.
• 16. vii. Thomas, born 18 Feb 1709; married Mrs. Susanna Lyman.

There were no children of Rev. Joseph³ Baxter and widow Rebecca Saffin.

There were no children of Rev. Joseph³ Baxter and Mrs. Mercy Bridgeman.

Generation Four

10. John⁴ Adams (Joseph³, Abigail²Baxter, Gregory¹) married Susanna Boylston.

Children of John⁴ Adams and Susanna Boylston were:

• 17. i. John⁵, born 30 Oct 1735 at Braintree (now Quincy), Norfolk County, Mass; married Abigail Smith.

11. John⁴ Baxter (John³, John², Gregory¹) was born on 10 Jan 1698 at Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass. He married Mehitable Willard, daughter of Daniel Willard, on 12 Mar 1728. He died on 30 Aug 1777 at age 79. They have gravestones at Quincy burying-ground, Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass.

Children of John⁴ Baxter and Mehitable Willard were as follows:

• i. John⁵; born 20 Jul 1729; died May 1807 at age 77.
• 18. ii. Daniel, born 1730; married Prudence Spear.
• 19. iii. Captain Seth, born 1732; married Elenor Allen; married Mary Saunders.
• iv. Edward Willard; born 1734; died; at Halifax in French War.
• v. Susannah; born 1736; Susannah Baxter married Joseph Belcher of Randolph, Mass 1763; died 1832 in a fit.
• vi. William; born 1738; died young.
• vii. Captain Joseph; born 1740; married Ann Adams; married Jerusha Arnold 5 Jun 1785; died 7 May 1829; They both have tombstones in the at Quincy burying-ground, Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass.

He was a Captain in Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War.

• viii. Jonathan; born 1743; married Susannah Field. They lived on the family homestead.
• ix. Sarah.
• x. Mehitable; her; died in Boston, Mass. of dysentery at age of 29.
• xi. Mary; born 1748; died 16 Jul 1840.

12. Jonathan⁴ Baxter (John³, John², Gregory¹) was born in 1699 at Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass. He married Mary Thompson on 18 Nov 1725. Mary was of Quincy, Mass. He died circa 1769.

Children of Jonathan⁴ Baxter and Mary Thompson were as follows:

• i. Hannah⁵; married Benjamin Beal.
• ii. Thompson.

13. Gregory⁴ Baxter (John³, John², Gregory¹) was born on 14 Feb 1706 at Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass. Gregory Baxter married Mary Wilson of Braintree, Mass. The church records list her name as Mary Wilford and that both individuals are from Braintree, Mass on 17 Oct 1728. He died on 9 Jan 1763 at age 56. He was buried at Braintree, Norfolk County, Mass.

Children of Gregory⁴ Baxter and Mary Wilson were as follows:

• i. William⁵.
• 20. ii. Newton, married Hannah Stow.
• iii. Mary; married Captain James Clark Sep 1752.

14. Benjamin⁴ Baxter (Samuel³, John², Gregory¹) was born on 3 Feb 1700. He married Abigail Beals. He died in 1754.

Children of Benjamin⁴ Baxter and Abigail Beals were as follows:

• i. Benjamin⁵.
• ii. Abigail; married John Adams 8 Feb 1750 at Milton, Norfolk County, Mass, John was of Milton, Mass. and Abigail from Braintree, Mass. according to the church record of their marriage.

• 21. vi. Paul, married Ann (--?--).

15. John⁴ Baxter (Joseph³, John², Gregory¹) was born on 2 May 1708. He was baptized on 9 May 1708. He married Rebecah Fisher on 12 Oct 1732. He died on 14 Nov 1788 at age 80.

Children of John⁴ Baxter and Rebecah Fisher were as follows:

• i. Joseph⁵; born 5 Feb 1733; died 6 Feb 1820 at age 87.
• ii. Nathan; born 27 Nov 1735; died 21 Dec 1735.
• iii. Mary; born 15 Apr 1737; Mary Baxter married Thomas Mason of Princeton, Mass; died 8 Apr 1824 at age 86.
• iv. Richard; born 3 Mar 1739; died 3 Jan 1816 at age 76.
• v. Moses; born 11 Nov 1742; died 5 Aug 1821 at age 78.
• vi. John Esq.; born 8 Oct 1746; died 5 Mar 1832 at age 85.
• vii. Sarah; born 27 Jan 1750; married Silas Bullard; died 26 Oct 1780 at age 30.

16. Thomas⁴ Baxter (Joseph³, John², Gregory¹) was born on 18 Feb 1709. He was baptized on 19 Feb 1709. Mrs. Susanna Lyman married Thomas Baxter of Boston on 18 Aug 1736. He died on 27 Jan 1750 at Boston, Suffolk County, Mass, at age 40.

Children of Thomas⁴ Baxter and Mrs. Susanna Lyman were:

• i. Dorothy⁵.

Generation Five

17. John⁵ Adams (John⁴, Joseph³, Abigail²Baxter, Gregory¹) was born on 30 Oct 1735 at Braintree (now Quincy), Norfolk County, Mass. He married Abigail Smith on 25 Oct 1764. He died on 4 Jul 1826 at age 90.

Children of John⁵ Adams and Abigail Smith were:

• i. John Quincy⁶; born 11 Jul 1767 at Braintree (now Quincy), Norfolk County, Mass; married Louisa Catherine Johnson 26 Jul 1797; died 23 Feb 1848 at Washington, D.C., at age 80.

18. Daniel⁵ Baxter (John⁴, John³, John², Gregory¹) was born in 1730. He married Prudence Spear, daughter of John Spear, in 1755. He died of lockjaw on 9 Sep 1774. He was buried at Quincy burying-ground, Quincy, Norfolk County, Mass; "An honest man is the noblest work of God," is the inscription upon his tomb in the Quincy burying-ground.

Children of Daniel⁵ Baxter and Prudence Spear were as follows:

• i. Edward Willard⁶; Edward Willard Baxter married Rhoda Field of Braintree, Mass 2 Dec 1779.
• ii. Daniel; born 1758; married Sarah White 1787.

• iv. Relief; married Joseph Field 3 May 1791.

• viii. Esther; married Eben Newcomb Jr. 17 Aug 1794.

19. Captain Seth⁵ Baxter (John⁴, John³, John², Gregory¹) was born in 1732. He married Elenor Allen, daughter of Jonathan Allen, on 26 Oct 1758. He married Mary Saunders on 20 Dec 1767. He died on 8 Aug 1805.

Capt. Seth Baxter was commander of a company of marines on board the American cruiser, "Hancock," when she captured the English frigate, "Fox," in Dec., 1775, having on board military supplies which greatly helped the Continental troops against the Boston garrison.

Children of Captain Seth⁵ Baxter and Elenor Allen were as follows:

• ii. Edward Willard.
• iii. Catherine.

Children of Captain Seth⁵ Baxter and Mary Saunders were as follows:

20. Newton⁵ Baxter (Gregory⁴, John³, John², Gregory¹). Newton Baxter married Hannah Stow of Braintree, Mass on 13 Mar 1750.

Children of Newton⁵ Baxter and Hannah Stow were:

21. Paul⁵ Baxter (Benjamin⁴, Samuel³, John², Gregory¹) married Ann (--?--).

22. Newton⁶ Baxter (Newton⁵, Gregory⁴, John³, John², Gregory¹) married Eunice Coolidge on 26 Jun 1783.

Children of Newton⁶ Baxter and Eunice Coolidge were as follows:

• i. Eunice⁷; born 28 Dec 1783.
• ii. Hannah; born 18 May 1786.
• iii. Issac Newton; born 7 Dec 1788.
