Cousin and Removed

COUSINS AND REMOVED

From dictionaries:

COUSIN: 1. The son or daughter of an uncle or aunt. 2. one related by descent in a diverging line from a known common ancestor. The children of brothers and sisters are called cousins, cousins-german, first cousins, or full cousins; children of first cousins are called second cousins, etc. Often, however the term second cousin is loosely applied to the son or daughter of a cousin-german, more properly called a first cousin once removed.

REMOVED: 1. existing apart; distant; Their house was far removed from the village. [not in Galka!] 2. separated by a degree in relationship; a first cousin once removed is a child of that first cousin.

All of my descendents for time immemorial will be first cousins of my first cousins! One generation down (my children) are called 1st cousin 1x removed. Five generations down from me - my great great great grandchild is still a first cousin to all my first cousins - but is called first cousin 5 x removed to indicate the number of generations separating the two people.

If two people have the same *G*randparents; they are (1 *G*) first cousins If two people have the same "G*reat *G*randparents; they are (2 *G.*s) second cousins. Etc: same *G*reat *G*reat *G*randparents; they are (3 *G*s) third cousins.

As an example consider these lines of descent. Heinrich has two children: Fred1 and George1. Fred1 has a son named Fred2. George1 has a son named George2. Etc down a total of five generations to Fred5 and George5.

Heinrich (the father)
Fred1 - - brothers - - - George1
Fred2 - - 1st cousins - - - George2
Fred3 - - 2nd cousins - - - George3
Fred4 - - 3rd cousins - - - George4
Fred5 - - 4th cousins - - - George5

Straight across the chart it is rather easy.

Heinrich is the Grandfather of Fred2 and also the Grandfather of George2
There is only one G in each relationship to Heinrich - One G = 1st cousins.

Children of 1st cousins are 2nd cousins to each other and still 1st cousins to the generation above them. Children of 2nd cousins are 3rd cousins to each other, 2nd cousins to the generation above them, and 1st cousins of the generation above that one. (but see the use of removed to indicate the number of generations they are apart.)

Heinrich is the Great Great Great Grandfather of Fred5 and also the Great Great Great Grandfather of George5.
Each of the children has 4 G's in his relationship to Heinrich.
They (Fred5 and George5) are therefore 4th Cousins.

Cousins REMOVED: relates to the number of generations separating two people.
My 1st cousin's child is still my 1st cousin - but one generation lower down; therefore my 1st cousin's child is my 1st cousin once removed. The child of my 1st cousin once removed is still my 1st cousin but is now my 1st cousin twice removed. (We are related straight across as 1st cousins but are two generations separated).

Counting Gs works by accounting for the number of generations separating two persons with a common ancestor. Heinrich is Fred2*s Grandfather (1 G), but is *George5's Great Great Great Grandfather. (4 Gs)
They each have one G in common and are therefore 1st Cousins; but there are 3 Gs left over therefore they are 1st cousins 3 times removed.
