This cemetery is located in the SE corner of section 35,
Ceneter Township and almost on the line with Jackson Township. The
first burials were in 1843. There are two Civil War veterans in the
cemetery and Lot Abraham is suppose to have buried his cavalry horse
here. He also built a chapel on the site. While searching for the
cemetery my husband startled a six point buck who was resting inside
the chapel. I found twenty burials.
I was told that the Center Township Trustees placed the
white fence around the cemetery and the cemetery was very neatly
mowed. Imagine drive one half mile through tall grass and then
suddently you see this stone chapel with no windows and the neatly
mowed cemetery in the middle of nowhere.
Please ask permission to go back, from the lady who lives
on the other side of the quarry.
Lot Abraham was three years old when he came with his
family to Center township in 1841. His father John died in 1843 and
may be the first burial in the cemetery. Lot Abraham enlisted in the
Civil War in Sept 1861 and became a Capt. He was mustered out Aug 8,
1865. He married Sarah Alden in 1865 whose father was a stone-cutter
and dressed the first marble in Henry County, and put the first
lettering on tombstones. Lot Abraham was elected to the state senate
and served in the Nineteenth and Twentieth General
Assemblies.
This is the gate that leads into the lane that goes up to
the old farmstead.
Lane loops around the fence and goes behind the barn and
then east
Coming back from the cemetery on the path. The homestead
would be the farthest trees. I believe we are passing a pond on the
left.

Lot Abraham's Chapel.
I wonder if this was for funeral services, weekly worship
or a memorial to his wife and father.
