The Caldwell Family
Many of the Caldwells of Haywood County are descended from Henry
Caldwell (b. circa 1760 in PA). I know little of Henry Caldwell except
where he was born and that he moved to what is now Madison County, NC.
I recently learned about him and his son, James Caldwell. I knew
more about James' son Levi and Levi's wife, Mary Ann. One family tradition
is that Mary Ann was a Nailon and was one of the people in a cattle drive
from Tennessee to South Carolina. She and Levi met in the Cataloochee section
of Haywood County. Other information states that she was a Daughty from
Madison County. This comes from the death certificate of one of her sons.
The most recent information comes from a descendent of Patrick Naillon
and this information states that Mary Ann is Patrick's fifth child from
his first marriage.
Levi was a soldier in the Confederacy. He was taken prisoner and as a result
his health was affected. He managed to get back to Cataloochee but soon
died. Levi was my great-great grandfather.
