The Howell Family
The majority of the Howells of Haywood County are
descended from John Howell (about 1600-1679) who came
from Wales to Virginia. He is termed John Howell I. One
of his sons was John Howell II (1630's-1732). One of John
Howell II's sons was Joseph Howell I (about 1690-1750).
Joseph Howell I moved from Virginia to what is now known
as Edgecombe County, NC. One of Joseph Howell I's sons
was Joseph Howell II (about
1733-1835). Joseph II is thought to be a Revolutionary
War Patriot, and many of the Howell descendents across
America trace their origin to him.
