Jeremiah Brower/Brewer
of Highgate, Vermont
February 26, 1738 - March 13, 1822
Thisis a work in progress and is in its infancy. Check back and see what is added in the near future. July, 2009
Introduction
The focus of this site isthe research of Jeremiah Brower/Brewer of Highgate, Vermont, and all hisdescendants, as well as any allied and collateral lines.Jeremiah Brower/Brewer married Hannah Thomas about 1775, Schaghticoke, NY, and had eleven children from this marriage. It is believed and likely that Jeremiah Brower was married previously, possibly to a Margaret Hager, or Margaret Hidickie, but to date, no proof or any supporting evidence has been found, nor any of the descended lines from this marriage. This information comes from family members that remained in the Vermont/Quebec area, and needs much more research.
There are many lines of Jeremiah Brower that are accounted for, but there are still many that are not. I am hoping to locate other descendants or researchers from this line and share information. I also include many collateral and allied lines that marry into the Brower/Brewer lines. If you descend from Jeremiah Brower/Brewer, or suspect that you do, please contact me at [email protected].
Native American Ancestry
Another area of research that is of great interest to me isthe Native ancestry in our lines. I have family traditions in my line of Native ancestry, but to this day have not found the parents of the two "known" Native American grandmothers that married my Brower/Brewer grandfathers. I am still searching.I have found enough cousins who support similar oral traditions, that I would like to dedicate a section of this site to that research area. Finding written documentation of the Native heritage may not be possible, but I believe that along with the oral traditions, circumstantial evidence, anddocumentation, wecancorrelate this to knownNative lines fom this time and region. Ongoing research on the tribes from NewEngland, and Lower Canada, both pre and post Revolution, their migration patterns, customs, and assimilation intonon-Native culturesare my focus.
DNA
DNA testingof men descended from Jeremiah Brower/Brewer has determined that Jeremiah isa descendant of Adam Brouwer Berkhoven. DNA for genealogical purposes is a recent but powerful tool. It is still ayoung field, therefore, the more people that participate in it, the more benefits for everyone. Y-DNA testing is essential in sorting out the Dutch Brouwers from the English Brewers, but has a benefit beyond just testing the men. If a direct female descendant from Hannah Thomas could be located, and would be willing to participate in a mtDNA test, it might help determine Native American ancestry or other interesting facts.
