Elizabeth Jane (Warren) & Madison Hansen Rich

Elizabeth Jane was the oldest child of Zachary Isam and Rebecca Warren. She was born in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1835. Sometime after her birth, her family moved to the adjacent county in Jackson County, Alabama.

Madison’s father John Rich was believed to be a Quaker.  When he married Mary Hancock, a non-Quaker, December 15, 1832, he was disowned.  Madison was born in Randolph County, North Carolina May 8, 1834.  In about 1837 Madison’s grandparents Peter W. and Sarah Rich moved to Grant County, Indiana.  Madison family moved to Jackson County, Alabama.  Madison was 10 years old when his parents, brothers, and sister died of a sickness.  Madison then lived with some friends, Absalom Dobbury and his wife also from North Carolina.  On December 14, 1854 Madison and Elizabeth Jane Warren married in Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama.  They must have known each other for some time because they only lived two farms apart.

During the Civil War most of Jackson County including the Warrens were for the South.  On September 10, 1863 Madison enlisted in the Union Army in Co. A. First Regiment, Alabama Vidette Volunteer Cavalry.  The family story is that Elizabeth’s brothers threatened to kill Madison after the war.  When Madison returned he and his family left at night to get out of town without anyone seeing them.  They moved where his grandparents were living in Fairmount, Grand County, Indiana.

Elizabeth and Madison had six children.  The first four John, Mary Ann, Joseph, and Samuel were born in Jackson County, Alabama.  Rebecca Jane and Franklin were born in Grand County, Indiana.  Elizabeth died while living in Fairmount, Grand County, Indiana on August 14, 1874.

Madison then married Charity Benbow in Grant County, Indiana August 13, 1875.  In September of 1876 they moved to Fremont County, Iowa and in February 1878 to Whitemound, Jewell County, Kansas.  Madison and Charity had four children: Eliza Idella born in Fairmount, Indiana and Ellen, Elizabeth, and Nancy Kathryn born in Whitemound, Kansas.  Madison died of Bright’s disease on December 3, 1906 at the age of 72 years, 6 months, and 25 days and is buried in the Oak Creek Cemetery in Whitemound Township, Kansas.
