2-MARTHA “JANE” BISHOP (b.Aug 22, 1824 in Newton Co, GA-d.between

1880-Mar 3, 1890 in Newton Co, GA). Married on July 31, 1846 in Newton

Co, GA to LABAN HORTON (Born in 1820 GA-Died June of 1862 GA).


3-JOSEPH HENRY BISHOP (b.Jan 13, 1828, died Sept/Oct 1847).

He was in Loyall’s Co, GA Mounted Volunteers during the Mexican War.

In a letter dated July 24, 1847 from Robert Glass to his family, he says "Joseph Bishop is well and hardy-tell his Mother."  Joseph died near Puebla, Mexico a few months later.

6-LUSINA “CAROLINE” BISHOP (Sept 6, 1834-Oct 5, 1909).

Married on Sept 30, 1851 to FRANCIS MARION NIX (b.Feb 16, 1823-

d.Apr 3, 1901). He was her step brother. He was possibly a Mexican War

Soldier. Both buried at Nix Cemetery.

One of their children:

            -TALLULAH GERTRUDE NIX (b.1856-d.1944).

Married A.J. BELCHER. Buried at Anderson Belcher Cemetery. 





After their marriage, Joseph and Margaret Bishop lived in Caswell County, NC for a few years, then moved to Covington, Newton Co., GA. They came through in covered wagons before the railroads were built.


Joseph Bishop is listed on the 1830 Census of Newton Co, GA. They had 3 slaves.


Joseph Bishop died in 1834, and Margaret Bishop is listed as the head of household on the 1840 census.


*Margaret's 2nd marriage was to EDWARD NIX on Dec 24, 1848 in Newton Co. He was born in 1787 in South Carolina and died Oct 21, 1850 in Newton Co. He was a Deacon at Missionary Baptist Church. His 1st wife was Cynthia Pattern (b.1795, d. bef. Dec 1848).  They are listed on the 1850 Census of Newton Co.


After Edward Nix’s death, Margaret Martin Bishop Nix lived with her daughter Lusina “Caroline” Bishop Nix in Newton County.
