Rev. Edgar Marcelus Brooks was the paternal grandfather of Nancy Detweiler. He was born on 2/5/1861 in Stanly County, N.C. The Brooks Bridge of History states Edgar grew up along the banks of the Rocky River (evidently on the Union County side of the river). The 1880 U.S. census lists Edgar as age 19 and living in Burnsville, Anson County, N.C. with his parents, who were farmers. His parents were Culpepper Paul Brooks and Louisa Lowery Allen. Edgar served numerous churches during his ministerial career including what is now First Baptist Church in New London, Rocky River Baptist Church in Anson County, Peachland Baptist Church in Anson County, and Lumber Bridge Baptist Church in Robeson County. He wrote the History of Rocky River Baptist Church and History of the Brooks Family of Union County. He died on 5/26/1943 and is buried in Norview Gardens Cemetery in Palmerville, N.C.
Edgar married Emma Eugenia Morton on 1/23/1901. Emma was born 2/15/1879, most likely in Stanly County. Her parents were Rev. David Stanly Morton and Mary Jane Tucker. She died on 5/24/1946 and is buried in Norview Gardens Cemetery in Palmerville, N.C.
