     James S. Nichols, 83 died at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at Alton Memorial Hospital.

 

     He was born May 19, 1923 in Benton, Ill., to Fred C and Kathryn (Bealmer) Nichols.

 

     He married the former Peggy Jean Thomas on Sept. 27, 1948 in Morganfield, Ky. She died in 1994.

 

     A World War II Army veteran, he was a self employed barber.  He was a member of VFW Post 1308 in Alton and a lifetime member of Whitelaw Avenue Baptist Church in Wood River.

 

     He is survived by a daughter and her husband Denise and Phil Schmitz of Rosewood Heights; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jodie and Michael Hayes, Jennifer and Paul Dowdy and Jamie Schmitz and her companion, James Bertoletti; and four great-grandchildren, Samantha Hayes, Taylor Dowdy, Christian Schmitz and Charlotte Hayes.

 

     Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.  The Rev. Richard Newcom will officiate

     Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.  Military rites will be accorded by Alton VFW Post 1308.

 

     Memorial may be made to Whitelaw Avenue Baptist Church, the Alzheimer’s disease Foundation and the American Diabetes Association.
