MINUTES OF THE

MUDDY RIVER BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Began and held at Hopewell Meeting House

in Wayne County, Illinois, Saturday before

Third Sunday in September 1825

and days following

In case of Elder Stilley's failure, Elder Charles Lee agreeable to appointment preached the introduction from one hundred and thirty third Psalm and first verse. "Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren" & .

The Association then convened and being opened with prayer by Elder Carpenter, proceeded to business.

1st. Chose Elder Chester carpenter, Moderator, and Bro. Oliver Morris, Clerk.

2n. Letters from the following churches were read and their messengers names enrolled.

3rd. A letter of correspondence from Little River Association was received by their messengers, Elder fielding Wolf, and Brother George Gehorn, and Dawson Haggard, and took their seats with us.

4th. Received a petitionary Letter from the Salem Association by their messengers Elders Elias Roberts, and Thomas Murfey and agree to correspond with that Association. Also invited their messengers to a seat with us.

5th. Received a petitionary Letter from Cape Girardeau Association by Elder Edwards, and agree to correspond with that Association, also invited said Edwards to a seat with us.

6th. received a second petitionary Letter from the Sangamon Association, but no messengers, and agree to answer them by a letter, and request them to reconsider the 10th article of their Principles, and that Elder Edwards write that Letter.

7th. Appointed Elder Williams to write a corresponding Letter to Little River Association, Brother Bethel to Salem Association, Eld. Henderson to Cape Girardeau Association, and continue the order from last Association for Elder Watkins to write a corresponding Letter to the Illinois Association.

8th. Appointed Brethren Watkins, Webb, Cantril, Bethel, Carpenter, Powel and Morris a committee of arrangement to report on Monday morning.

9th. Requested Elders Edwards, Wolf, and Roberts to occupy the stand tomorrow and that meeting commence at eleven o'clock A.M. and agree to meet on Monday at 11 o'clock A.M.

Sunday worship was opened by Elder F. Wolf from Psalms 89, v. 15 & 16, "Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound." &.

Elder Roberts, from the 145th Psalm and 11th v. "They shall speak of the glory of the kingdom, and talk of thy powers" &. Elder Edwards, from Revelation 20th chapter, and 12th v. "And I saw the dead small and great, stand before God, and the Books were opened, and another Book was opened and the dead judged.: Monday met according to adjournment and, after prayer by the Moderator, proceeded to business.

10th Called for the committee's arrangement, which was read and received and the committee dismissed.

11th. Called for corresponding Letter to Little River Association which was received, and Elders Herron, and Brothers Hamilton and Clay, were appointed corresponding messengers to bear the same.

12th. Called for the corresponding letter to Salem Association which was received, and Elders Stephen williams, Thomas Lee, and brother James Taylor were appointed corresponding messengers to bear the same.

13th. Called for the letter to Sangaman association, and Brother Alanson Dawdy appointed to forward the same to that Association.

14th. Called for the corresponding Letter to Cape Girardeau Association, which was received, and Elder Short was appointed to bear the same and to correspond with that Association for us.

15th. Called for the corresponding Letter to the Illinois Association and Elder Herron and Brother Manis were appointed corresponding messengers to bear the same.

16th. The circular letter called for and agreed not to print it this year.

17th. Appointed Brethren Henderson, Herron, and Hamilton a committee of finance who report that they have received from the Churches as their contributions

18th. Took up the query from Hopewell Church which is as follows "Does the word of God require private dealing for every offence whether private or publick?" Answer, "It does not."

19th. Query, "What shall a Church do with people living within their bounds, who have no letter, and yet profess a desire to become members?" Answer, "We think every Church may do as they think proper in such cases, but advise thim to act with caution."

20th This Association agrees to dismiss Hopewell, Big Mount Prairie, Burnt Prairie, Republican and Hargrave Prairie Churches to form a new Association, and that the Skillet Fork of the Wabash be the line between the Muddy River Association, and this new one designed.

21st. Appointed Brother Oliver Morris to prepare these Minutes for the Press, and that Elder Wilson Henderson superintend the printing of the same, and that he have 350 copies printed, reserve 5 copies for each corresponding Association, one for the Secretary, and distribute the balance among the Churches of this Association (including those dismissed for a new Association) in proportion to the money each Church has paid, and that he call on the Treasury for money to pay for printing these minutes.

22nd. Our next Association to be holden at Bethel's Creek, in Gallatin County, Illinois, to commence on Saturday before the third Lord's Day and days following, in September 1826 and that Meeting begin at 10 o'clock A.M.

23rd. Our next yearly meeting to be holden at the Middle Fork M.R. Church in Franklin Co., Ill., to commence on Friday before the 4th Sunday in June 1826: and appointed Elders Thos. Lee, Herron, & Henderson to attend the same.

24th. Appointed Elder Chester Carpenter to preach the introduction, at our next Association and, in case of failure, Elder William Watkins.

25th. In answer to a request from those Churches dismissed from this Association, we request Elders W. Henderson, C. Carpenter, J. Herron, T. Lee, & W. Rondeauy, to assist them in their constitution on Friday before the 4th Sab. in Oct. 1825 at Burnt Prairie, White Co., Ill. After prayer by the Mod., adjourned to the time and place appointed.
