MINUTES OF THE

MUDDY RIVER BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Begun and Held at

BETHEL'S CREEK MEETING-HOUSE

Gallatin County Illinois,

Saturday before the Third Lord's day

and days following, in September, 1826

Elder Chester Carpenter, aggreeable to appointment, preached the introductory Sermon from the 3rd chap. and 3rd v. of Amos, "How can two walk together unless they be agreed." The Association then convened, and being open with prayer by Elder Carpenter, proceeded to business.

1. Letters from the following churches were read and their messengers names enrolled. (see next page.)

2. Chose Elder Chester Carpenter Moderator, and Brother Oliver Morris Clerk and Brother Chester Bethel Assistant Clerk.

3. A letter of correspndence from Cape Girardeau Association was received by the hand of their messenger, Elder Brown, and he invited to a seat with us, and having a knowledge that their next Association comes after ours, we omit writing them a letter until our next Association.

4. A corresponding Letter from Salem Association was received by the hands of their messengers, Elder S. Jones and Brother Samuel Hughes, and they took their seats with us.

5. Corresponding Letter from Little River Association was received by the hand of Brother Gehon and he took his seat with us.

7. Appointed Brother Burnet to write a corresponding Letter to Little River Association, C. Bethel to Salem Association, and Moses Pearce to Illinois Association.

8. Elder Donahoo and Brother Smith, from Cape Girardeau Association, were invited to a seat with us.

9. Appointed Bretheren Bethel, Carpenter, Boren, and Pearce & Herron together with the Clerk, a committee of arrangement to report on Monday Morning.

10. Requested Elders Roberts, Donahoo and Jones, to preach tomorrow, and meeting commence at 10 o'clock.

11. Sunday worship was opened by Elder Samuel Jones, from Exodus 3rd chap. 14th v. "I am. hath sent me unto you."

12. Elder Thomas Donahoo, from John 1st chap. 34th v. "I saw and bare record that this is the Son of God."

The last church was received at this Association.

13. Elder Elias Roberts, from Matthew 9th chap. 12th v. "they that be whole need not a physician, but they that be sick.

14. Met according to adjournment, and after prayer by the Moderator, proceeded to business.

15. Called for the committee of arrangement to bring up their report, which was read, received and the committee discharged.

16. Called for the corresponding Letter to Little to Little River Association, which was received, and Elder Moses Pearce and Richard F. Boren, were appointed corresponding messengers to bear the same.

17. Called for the corresponding Letter to Illinois Association, which was received, and Elder Elias Short and Silas Christler, were appointed corresponding messengers to bear the same.

18. Called for the corresponding Letter to Salem Association, which was received and Moses Pearce and E. Franklin were appointed corresponding messengers.

19. Called for the corresponding Letter to Little Wabash Association, which was received and Elder Carpenter, and Elder Herrin, were appointed corresponding messengers to bear the same.

20. Appointed Brethren D. Wilbank, E. Short, Burnet and Bethel, a committee of finance, who report that they have received from the Churches, this year as their share of the contributions $16.25

21. At the request of Big Creek Church, resolved that the 4th day of July next be set apart for a day of praise and thanksgiving.

22. On the petition of some of our Churches, it is resolved, That Brethren Hamilton, Smith, Webb, Carpenter and Short are appointed a presbytery to prepare our articles of faith, with the Scripture proofs, and report the same at our next Association.

23. We agree that our next yearly meeting be held at East Fork of Muddy River Church commencing the Friday before the 3rd Sunday in July next, and that Brethren Hamilton, Carpenter, Short, Herron and Stilley are appointed to attend the same.

24. Appointed Brother Oliver Morris to prepare these Minutes for the Press and E. Bethel to superintend the printing of the same, have 300 copies struck, reserve 5 copies for each corresponding Association, one for the Secretary, and distribute the balance among the Churches of this Association in proportion to the money each Church has contributed this year, and that he call on the Treasurer for money to pay for printing these Minutes.

25. Our next Association to be held at Lick Creek Church, White County, Illinois, to commence Saturday before the 2nd Sunday, and days following in September 1827 and that meeting commence at ten o'clock A.M.

26. Appointed Elder Stephen Stilley to preach the Introduction, and in case of failure, Elder Isaac Herrin. Then adjourned to the time and place appointed.
