MINUTES OF THE

EIGHTH MEETING

of the

MUDDY RIVER ASSOCIATION

Began and held at

Island Ripple Meeting House

Gallatin County, Illinois

Saturday before the Third Sunday and days following

Elder John Baugh, agreeable to appointment, preached the Introductory Sermon from the 68th Psalm, 11th verse, "The Lord give the word &".

The Association then commenced and being opened with prayer by Elder Chester Carpenter, proceeded to business.

1. Letters from the following Churches were read and their messengers names enrolled.

2. Chose Elder Chester Carpenter, Moderator, William Burnet, Clerk, and Brother Oliver Morris, Assistant Clerk.

3. A Letter of correspondence from Little River Association, Tennessee, was received by the hands of their messengers John Terry, who took his seat with us.

4. A Letter of correspondence was received from the Illinois Association by the hand of Elder Wm. Kinny, their messenger, who took his seat with us.

5. A Letter of correspondence was received from Cape Girardeau Association, by the hands of Elder Brown and Aaron McIntosh, James and Thomas Ferrel, who took their seats with us.

6. Salem Association sent no letter, but one of their Messengers, Elder Eli Holcom, attended and took his seat with us.

8. Appointed Brother Baugh to write a corresponding Letter to the Little River Association, Brother Henderson to Illinois. Brother McCool to Little Wabash, and Brother More to Salem.

9. Appointed Brother Burnet, C. Carpenter, Baugh, M. Carpenter and Arnet a committee of arrangement to report on Monday morning.

10. Requested Elders Kinney, Brown and Mansfield to preach tomorrow and Elder McIntosh to dismiss the meeting. Worship to commence at ten o'clock A.M. Then adjourned until Monday Morning ten o'clock.

11.Sunday worship was opened by Elder Brown, from Mark 4th chap. 3rd v. "Hearken; behold there went out a sower to sow &". Elder Kinney, from Romans, chap. 5th, v. 12th, "Wherefore as by one man Sin entered into the world, &". Elder Mansfield from Revelations chap. 15th, v. 3, "And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, &".

12. Monday met according to adjournement, and after prayer by the Moderator proceeded to business.

13. Called for the committee's arrangement which was read, received, and the committee dismissed.

14. The Association agrees to adopt the following rule relative to filling the Stand on Monday (I.E.) that one of the messengers from the Church where the Association then sits, shall be appointed to ascertain the choice of the congregation, whom they wish to fill the Stand, which choice shall be complied with if practicable.

15. Our next Association to be held at Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Ill, and to commence the Saturday before the 3rd Sunday in September, 1829. Elder Robert More to preach the Introductory Sermon, in case of failure, Elder Wilson Henderson. Also that worship commence at ten o'clock A.M.

16. Called for the corrresponding Letter to Little River Association, which was read, received and appointed Brothers Irwin Curlee and Adam McCool bearers of the same.

17. Called for the corresponding Letter to Illinois Association, which was read, received, and appointed Elder Robert More and Brother John Browning bearer of the same.

18. Called for the corresponding Letter to Cape Girardeau Association; but in consequence of their next Association coming after ours, we defer sending a letter, but will send one from our next Association. At our request, their present messengers promised to attend our next Association.

19. Called for the corresponding Letter to Salem Association, agree to send if an opportunity offers.

20. Called for the corresponding Letter to Little Wabash Association, appointed Elders John Baugh, Millon Carpenter & John Manis bearers of the same.

21. Appointed Brother John Lockhart to prepare these Minutes for the Press, and superintend the printing of the same, have 400 copies struck, reserve 5 copies for each corresponding Association, on for the Secretary, and distribute the balance among the Churches of this association in proportion to their contributions this year, and that he call upon the Treasurer for money to pay for the printing of the same.

22. Dismissed Unity Chruch from this Association, in order to join the Illinois.

23. Appointed Brother John Lockhart Secretary of this Association, in the room of Brother Oliver Morris.

24. Appointed Elder John Baugh to write a circular Letter for our next Association.

25. Appointed Brothers Hamilton, Burnet and Lockhart a committee of finance, who report that they have received from the Churches this year

26. The Association agrees to hold a yearly meeting at each of the places hereinafter mentioned. First, Ten Mile Meeting House, Hamilton County, Ill., to commence on Friday before the first Sunday in June, 1829 and that Elders E. Carpenter, Baugh, Feazell, and Henderson attend the same. Second, at Salem Meeting House, Franklin Co., Ill., to commence on Friday before the 4th Sunday in July, 1829, and that Elders Manis, Baugh, Henderson, Arnet, Stilley, & Bro. Adam McCool attend the same. Third, at Big Creek, Pope Co., Ill. to commence on the Friday before the 4th Sunday in Aug. 1829 and that Elders More, C. Carpenter, M. Carpenter and Bro. Adam McCool attend the same.

Called on the committee, who was sent last year in order to effect a Union with the Separate Baptists at Salem Meeting House, Franklin Co., Ill. The committee report that a union could not be affected. The committee discharged.

28. Then adjourned to the time and place appointed.
