MINUTES OF THE NINTH MEETING

OF THE MUDDY RIVER ASSOCIATION

Began and held at

Mount Vernon Meeting House

Saturday preceeding the Third Lord's

day and days following in September, 1829

Agreeably to appointment, Elder Robert Moore preached the Introductory Sermon from the thirty third chapter of Isaiah, twenty first verse, "But there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers &".

The Association then convened, and being opened with prayer by Elder Chester Carpenter, proceeded to business.

1. Letters from the following churches was read and their messengers names enrolled.

2. Elder Chester Carpenter chosen Moderator, Brother Oliver Morris, Clerk, and Brother William Burnet, Assistant Clerk.

3. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Little River Association, Ky. but no messenger.

4. Received a Letter of correspondence form the Illinois Association by the hand of their messenger Elder Jones, who took his seat with us.

5. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Salem Association, Ind. by the hand of their messengers, Elders Lewis Williams and Holcom, who took their seats with us.

6. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Little Wabash Association, by the hand of their messenger Elder Elias Roberts, who took his seat with us.

7. No Letter of correspondence was received from Cape Girardeau Association, in consequence of the Association meeting after ours, but their former messengers, Elder Brown and Robert G. Gentry being present, took their seats with us.

8. Appointed Brother Thomas H. Owen to write a corresponding Letter to the Litttle River Association, Elder More to Illinois, Elder Hamilton to Little Wabash, Elder M. Carpenter to Salem and Brother John Browning to Cape Girardeau.

9. Appointed Brothers Hamilton, Burnet, Swaford, C. Carpenter, and Owen a committee of arrangement to report on Monday Morning.

10. Requested Elder Roberts, Jones, Holcomb and Williams to occupy the Stand tomorrow, and that worship begin at ten o'clock A.M.

11. Adjourned until Monday Morning ten o'clock.

12. Sunday worship was opened by Elder Roberts from the 133th Psalm, 15th verse, "Bethold how good and how pleased & ". Elder Holcom from Matthew 16th chap., 18th verse, "And I say also unto thee &". Elder Jones from the 22nd Psalm 27th verse, "All the end of the world shall remember &".

Mt. Plesant Church received at this Association, and the nine that were dismissed.

13. Monday met according to adjournment, after prayer by the Moderator, proceeded to business.

14. Called for the committee's arrangement, which was read, received and the committee dismissed.

15. The following Churches were dismissed from this Association for the purpose of forming a new one, to wit: E.F.M. River, M.F.M. River, Ten Mile Creek, Mount Vernon, Salem, Bethlehem, More's Prairie, and Mount Pleasant. And that Elders Hamilton, Stilley, Henderson, and Gholston attend at the M.F.M. River Meeting House, Franklin County, Illinois, on the Saturday preceeding the 4th Lord's day in October next to aid and assist them, the above named churches, in forming their Constitution.

16. Our next Association to be held at Rector's Fork Meeting House, Hamilton County, Illinois, to commence the Saturday preceeding the Introductory Sermon, in case of failure, Elder Hamilton. Worship to commence at ten o'clock A.M.

17. Called for the corresponding Letter to the Little Wabash association, which was read, received, and appointed Elders Millan, Carpenter and Wm. Gholston, bearers of the Same.

18. Called for the corresponding Letter to the Little River Association and appointed M. Carpenter, Herrin and Youngblood bearers of the same.

19. Called for the corresponding Letter to the Illinois A. and appointed Brother Thomas Smith bearer of the same.

20. Called for the corresponding Letter to Cape Girardeau, and appointed Brothers More and Youngblood bearers of the same.

21. Called for the corresponding Letter to Salem and requested Elder Elias Roberts to bear the same.

22. The Association agrees that the present year's expenses be paid out of the money now in the hands of the Treasurer and that the balance which then remains be divided between this and the new Association in proportion as 10 is to 8.

23. Appointed Brothers More, Hamilton and Burnet a committee of finance who report that there is now in the hands of the Treasurer $26.12.

24. The Association agrees to hold a yearly meeting at the following places, viz. at Bethlehem Meeting House, Franklin Co., Ill., to commence the Friday before the first Lord's day in July 1830, and that Elders Ross, M. Carpenter, Herrin and C. H. Clay attend the same. 2nd at Big Bay Meeting House, Pope Co., Ill. to commence at Friday before the 4th Lord's day in August 1830, and that Elders Herrin, Manis, Gholston and C. H. Clay attend the same.

25. Appointed Brother John Lockhart to prepare these minutes for the Press and Brother Thomas Smith to superintend the printing of the same, have 400 copies struck, reserve 5 copies for each corresponding Association, one for the Secretary and distribute the balance among the Churches, (including the Churches dismissed) in proportion to the number of members in each Church and that he call upon the Treasurer for money to pay for the printing of the same.

26. The Association acquaints Brother Lockhart, that his record as Secretary meets with their approbation, and that they wish him to prepare these minutes for the Press.

27. Appointed Brother John Hamilton to preside as Moderator in organizing the next Association, in case of failure, the present Assistant Clerk select a suitable person to fill the place.

28. Then adjourned to the time and place appointed.
