M I N U T E S

of the

Fifteenth Meeting

of the

MUDDY RIVER BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Begun and held at

Bethells Creek Meeting House

Gallatin County, Illinois

Commencing on Saturday preceding the 2nd Lord's Day

and days following in September

1835

Agreeable to appointment, Elder James Gholson preached the introductory sermon from the 5th chap. of Ephesians and 30th verse, "For we are members of his body, &".

The Association then convened and being opened with prayer by Elder C. H. Clay, proceeded to business.

1. Letters from the following churches were read and their messengers names enrolled.

2. Chose Brother William Gholson, Moderator, Brother Wm. Allen, Clerk, and Brother Jonathan Floyd, Assistant Clerk.

3. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Original Little River Association, Ky., by the hand of their messengers, Elders Andrew Mitchum and Brother Stallard Scott who were invited to a seat with us.

4. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Little Wabash Association, by the hands of their messengers Elder Moses Pearce, Joseph Cullen and Brother John Sands, who were invited to seats with us. Request B. William Burnett to write to them and Brethren Thomas P. More, Elders Wm. Gholson, Joseph Tucker and Isaac Johnson and John Breden bear the same.

5. Received no Letter nor messenger from Bethels Association, request Brother Tucker to write to them, and Elder Wm. Gholson and T. Coffee, A. Coffee, and R. Johnson bear the same.

6.Received a Letter of correspondence from the Salem Association, from the Salem Association, Ind, by the hand of Elder Lewis Duncan. Request Brother Womack to write to them and Elder Joseph Tucker and Brother John Braden bear the same.

7.The comittee who was appointed at the last Association to visit and confer with Wolf Creek Church made their report, which was referred to the committee of arrangement.

8. Appointed Brethren J. Womack, A. Coffee with the Moderator and Clerks, a committee of arrangement to report on Monday.

9. Request Elders Mitchum, Cullen & Duncan to preach tomorrow and Elder M. Pearce to conclude, worship to commence at 10 o'clock A.M.

10. This Association agrees to appoint Preachers to occupy the Stand on the Monday of each Association.

11. Adjourned until Monday Morning 10 o'clock.

12. Sunday worship was opened by Elder Mitchum from 92nd Psalm and 12th verse, "The righteous shall flourish like the Palm tree; &". Elder Cullen from 2nd Samuel 6th chap. & 6th, 7th verses, "And when they came to Nacon's threshing floor, &". Elder Duncan from 1st Corinthians, 12th chap. and 27th verse, "Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular." Elder Moses Pearce closed the exercises of the day.

13. Monday Morning met according to adjournment and after prayer by the Moderator, proceeded to business.

14. Called for the committee's arrangement, which was read, received and they discharged.

15. Request Brethren Pearce, Mitchum and Clay to preach today, and Elder Mattock to conclude.

16. Took up the report of the committee, who were sent to the Church at Wolf Creek as an advisory council, and it appearing from said report that she was still in difficulties appointed Brethren C. H. Clay, Wm. Gholson, J. Womack, J. Floyd and A. Coffee to visit them the Friday before the third Lord's Day in October next, to sit with them as an advisory council as heretofore and report to the next Association.

17.Request Brother Clay and Floyd to visit the Church at Big Bay Creek and inquire the cause when she did not represent herself at this meeting.

18. Taken under consideration the request of Brother More and others from Blockhouse Creek Church requesting this Association to council them what course to take to join some other Church in this Union. The Association recommends them to Grampier Church for council, or admittance into this Union through the medium of that Church.

19. Took up the Query from Grandpier Church which is as follows. "If an ordained Preacher commit any transgressions and repent for the same, acknowledge his fault to the Church he belongs to, and the Church still retains him in full fellowship; is his gift dead?"

20. Answer, "We think not."

21. Our next Association to be held with the Little Spring Church, Hamilton County, Ill. to commence on the Saturday before the 2nd Lord's Day in September 1836. And request Brother William Gholson to preach the Introductory Sermon and in case of failure Brother Joseph Tucker, and that worship begin at 10 o'clock A.M.

22. Appointed Bretheren Burnett, Hamilton, and Womack a committee of finance who report that they have received from the Churches $6.50 and from Brother Lockhart $1.97 making in all $8.47.

23. Request Brother Allen to prepare these minutes for the Press, have 300 copies struck, and reserve 5 copies for each corresponding Association, and distribute the remainder among the Churches agreeably to their contributions, and that the before mentioned sum of money be left in the hands of Brother Allen to pay for printing the same, and retain the balance if any until next meeting of the Association.

24. The question being taken, "Has Brother Lockhart transcended the authority given him at our last Association, respecting answering the charges of Bankstons Fork."

25. Answer unanimously, he has not.

26. This Association is of the opinion that it is here duty to insert the names of Wilson Henderson, Adam McCool, Marvel Brown, Aaron Sutton and J. Rachells in this Minute, who were formerly preachers among us, but have since seceded from this body.

27. Request Brother William Burnett to prepare a Circular Letter for our next Association.

28. At the request of Brother Lockhart received the Book containing the record of this Association and appointed Brother William Allen Secretary in his place.

29. This Association recommends to the churches they represent to adopt the name of Regular Baptist, as we believe the Churches have the power and report the same at our next Association in their Letters.

31. Adjourned to the time and place appointed.
