M I N U T E S

of the

Seventeenth Meeting

of the

MUDDY REVER REGULAR BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Began and held at the North Fork Meeting House

Hamilton, County, Illinois

Commencing on Saturday preceeding the Second Lord's Day

and days following in September 1837

Agreeable to appointment, Elder Joseph Tucker preached the Introductory sermon from Galatians 5th chap. and 1st verse, "stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, &'.

The Association then convened and being opened with prayer by Elder William Gholson, proceeded to business.

1. Letters from the following churches were read and their messengers names enrolled.

2. Chose Elder William Gholson, Moderator, and Brother John Lockhart, Clerk, and Brother Johnathan Floyd, Assistant Clerk.

3. Received no Letter of correspondence from the Salem Association, Ind. Elder John Pearce requested to write to them Elder Joseph Tucker, William Gholson, Archillus Coffee, Jas. Gholson and Charles H. Clay are requested to visit them.

4. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Original Little River Association by the hands of their messengers, Elder Baily Adams and James Mitchell, who were invited to seats with us. Elder Joseph Tucker is requested to write to them, and Elders C. H. Clay, William Gholson and A. Coffee are requested to visit them at Equality Meeting-House, Caldwell County, Ky. Friday preceding the third Lord's Day in August 1839.

5. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Little Wabash Association by the hands of their messengers, Elder Felix Potter and Brother Toliver Simpson, who were invited to seats with us. Elder Thomas Coffee is requested to write to them and Elders Thomas Coffee, J. Morse and J. Pearce are requested to visit them at Liberty church in Marion County, Ill. Friday preceding the first Lord's day in Sept. 1839.

6. Received a corresponding Letter from the Bethel Association by the hands of their messengers, Elder John P. Mattax who was invited to a seat with us. Elder A. Coffee is requested to write to them and Elders John Gibson, T. F. Lewis and John Pearce visit them.

7. Our next Association to be held with the Church at Bethel Creek, Gallatin Co., Ill., commencing the Saturday preceding the 2nd Lord's Day in Sept. 1839 and that Elder Charles H. Clay preach the Introductory sermon, in case of failure, Elder John Morse. Worship to commence at 10 o'clock A.M.

8. Appointed A. Coffee, C. H. Clay, and J. Wathen with the Moderator and Clerks a committee of arrangement to report on Monday Morning.

9. Request Elders Potter, Adams and Mitchell to occupy the Stand tomorrow. Elder More to close the exercise of the Day. Worship to commence at 10 o'clock A.M.

10. Received a letter by the hands of Brother James P. Smith and signed by himself and the other Baptist Brethren within the bounds of Clear Creek, requesting the advice of this Body which was referred to the committee of arrangement.

11. Adjourned until Monday Morning ten o'clock.

12. Sunday worship was opened by Elder Felix Potter from Proverbs of Solomon, chap. 24, and verse 27, "Prepare thy work within, &". Elder Baily Adams from St. Matthew, chap. 5th, and 14th verse, "Ye are the light of the world, &". Elder James Mitchell from St. John chap. 10th and verse 27th, "My sheep hear my voice, &". Elder William Gholson closed the exercise of the Day from Judges chap. 11th, and part of verse 35th, "Alas my Daughter thou hast brought me very low."

13. Monday met according to adjournment and after prayer by the Moderator, proceeded to Business.

14. Called for the committee's arrangment which was read, received and they discharged.

15. Request Elders Mattax, Mitchell and J. Pearce to occupy the Stand today.

16. Took up the request from the Island Ripple Church with regard to Elder Stephen Stilley, who has been excluded from that Church, for utterly refusing to fill his seat in conference and retaining his letter of dismission from the Church at Big Creek, Pope County, Illinois, contrary to good order.

17. Called for the committee who was appointed to visit the Church at Big Bay to know the cause of her not representing herself at the last sitting of this Association. Received the report of Bro. Floyd and in as much as that Church has failed to represent herself at the Association, it agrees to withdraw from said Church.

18. Called for the Circular letter which was read and ordered to be annexed to these minutes and in place of a circular for next year, we agree to annex our constitution to the next year's minutes.

19. Appointed Brethren Floyd, Bourland and Clay, a committee of finance who report that they have received from the churches $14.25. Order that fifty cents be handed to bro. Wathen, he having that much over the funds in his hands towards printing the minutes.

20. Request Brother Floyd to prepare these minutes for the Press, and Brother Wathen superintend the printing of the same, have 350 copies struck, and distribute as usual, and that the remaining thirteen and seventy five cents be left in his hands to pay for the printing the same.

21. The Association declines giving any advice to J. P. Smith and others within the bounds of the Clear Creek Association.

22. Is it good order for members of our Union to open their Doors, or invite Preachers to preach who have been excluded from our Union? We say it is not.
