Eighteenth Meeting

of the

MUDDY RIVER REGULAR BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Began and held at the

Grandpier Church

Pope County, Illinois

Commencing on Saturday before the Second Lord's Day

and days following in September

1838

Agreeable to appointment, Elder A. Coffey preached the Introductory sermon (in consequence of the failure of Elder John Morse) from the 4th chap. of Paul to the Ephesians and 5th verse, "Endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

The Association then convened and being opened with prayer by Elder William Gholson, proceeded to business.

1. Letters from the following churches were read and their messengers names enrolled.

2. Chose Elder William Gholson, Moderator, and Brother John Lockhart, Clerk, and Brother Johathan Floyd, Assistant Clerk.

3. Received no Letter of correspondence from the Salem Association, Ind. Elder John Pearce requested to write to them, and Elders Joseph Tucker, William Gholson, Archillus Coffey, James Gholson and Charles H. Clay requested to visit them.

4. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Original Little River Association by the hands of their messengers, Elders Baily Adams and James Mitchell, who were invited to seats with us. Elder Joseph Tucker is requested to write to them, and Elders C. H. Clay, William Gholson, and A. Coffey are requested to visit them, at Equality Meeting House, Caldwell County, Ky. Friday before the 3rd Lord's Day in August 1839.

5. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Little Wabash Association, by the hands of their messengers Elders Felix Potter and Brother Toliver Simpson, who were invited to seats with us, Elder Thomas Coffee, John Morse and John Pearce requested to visit them at Liberty Church, Marion Co., Ill., Friday before the 1st Lord's Day in Sept. 1839.

6. Received a letter of correspondence from the Bethel Association by the hands of their messenger, Elder John P. Mattax, who was invited to a seat with us. Elder A. Coffey requested to write to them, and Elders John Gibson, J.F.T. Lewis and John Pearce visit them.

7. Our next Association to be held with the Church at Bethel's Creek Gallatin Co., Ill., commencing Saturday before the 2nd Lord's Day in Sept. 1839. And that Elder Charles H. Clay preach the Introductory Sermon, in case of failure, Elder John Morse. Worship to commence at 10 o'clock A.M.

8. Appointed Brethren A. Coffey, C. H. Clay, and Joseph Wathen with the Moderator and Clerks a committee of arrangement to report on Monday Morning.

9. Requested Elders Potter, Adams, Mitchel to occupy the stand tomorrow, worship to commence at ten o' clock A.M.

10. received a letter by the hand of Brother James P. Smith signed by himself and other Baptist Brethren within the bounds of the Clear Creek Association, requesting the advice of this body, which was referred to the committee of arrangement.

11. Adjourned until Monday Morning 10 o'clock.

12. Sunday worship was opened by Elder Felix Potter from the Proverbs of Solomon, 24th chap. & 27th verse, "Prepare thy work without, &". Elder Baily Adams from St. Matthew 5th chap. & 14th verse, "Ye are the light of the world, &". Elder James Mitchell from St. John, 10th chap., & 27th verse, "My sheep hear my voice, &". Elder William Gholson closed the exercise of the day from Judges the 11th chap. & part of the 35th verse, "Alas my daughter, thou hast brought me very low."
