M I N U T E S

Of the Twentieth Meeting

of the

MUDDY RIVER REGULAR BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Begun and held with the Church at

Lick Creek, White County, Ill.

Commencing Saturday preceding the

Fourth Lord's day in Sept. 1840

And two Suceeding days

The congregation having convened agreeable to appointment, Elder John Morse preached the Introductory sermon from Ephesians 2nd chap. 10th verse, "For we are his workmanship, &".

The Association then convened and being opened with prayer by Elder Moses Pearce proceded to business by appointment Elder Moses Pearce Moderator Pro Tempore.

1. Letters from the following churches were read, received and their messengers names enrolled.

2. Chose Elder Moses Pearce, Moderator, Brother Wm. Allen, Clerk and Jonathan Floyd, Asst. Clerk.

3. Received a Letter of correspondence from the Original Little River Association by the hand of their messengers, Elder S. Scott and J. Mitchell, who were invited to seats with us, requested Bro. Floyd to prepare an answer to them.

4. Received a Letter of correspondence form the Little Wabash Association by the hand of their messengers, Elder Wm. Watkins and Brother Oliver Simpson and A. C. Hensinger, who were requested to take seats with us, requested Bro. Wm. Burnett to write to them an answer.

5. No Letter of correspondence was received from Bethel Association, but Elder Anderson, one of their messengers attended and informed the Association that a letter had been prepared and that it was in the hands of one of the other messengers who was not present. Elder Anderson was invited to a seat with us. Elder J.T.F. Lewis requested to write to them.

6. Agree to alter time of holding the Association from Saturday preceding the 2nd Lord's Day in September to Saturday preceding the fourth Lord's Day in September.

7. The next Association to be held at Middle Fork Saline, Gallatin Co., Ill., to commence Saturday preceding the 4th Lord's day in Sept., 1841. Elder John Pearce to preach the Introductory Sermon, and in case of failure, Elder Moses Pearce. Worship to commence at ten o'clock A.M.

8. Appointed Brethren Morse, Gholson, Gasaway and Lewis with the Moderator and Clerks, a committee of arrangement to report on Monday Morning.

9. Requested Elders Scott, Anderson and Mitchell and Watkins to occupy the Stand tomorrow, worship to commence at 10 o'clock A.M.

10. After Praise and Prayer by the Moderator, adjourned until 10 o'clock A.M. Monday Morning.

11. Sunday. Worship was opened by Elder Scott from Isaiah Chap. 35th and verse 8th, "And a highway shall be there and a way, &". Elder James Mitchell from 55th Chap. of Isaiah, 1st verse, "Ho, everyone that thirsteth, &". Elder Noble Anderson from Hebrews, Chap. 9th, 27th & 28th verses, "And as it is appointed unto man once to die, &". Elder Watkins closed the exercises of the Day by exhortation.

12. Monday Morning, met according to adjournment and after Praise and Prayer by the Moderator, proceeded to business.

13. Called for the Committee of Arrangement's report, which was read, received and they discharged.

14. Requested Elders Scott, Morse, and Downing to occupy the Stand today.

15. Called for the corresponding Letters, which were read and received by the Association, the following Brethren appointed to bear them, Elders T.J.F. Lewis, M. Pearce and Wm. Gholson to the Original Little River Association which commences Friday before the 4th Sunday in Aug. 1841 with the Mt. Ararat Church, Caldwell Co., Ky. Elder John Pearce, Colman, Harkins, and Israel Downing to Little Wabash, to be held with the Union Church, Lawrence Co., Ill., Friday before the 1st Sunday in Sept. 1841. To Bethel Association, Elders John Pearce, John Gibson and Bro. Wm. Allen, commencing on Saturday before the 1st Lord's Day in Oct. 1840 with the Salem Church, Franklin Co., Ill.

16. Appointed Brethren Wathen, Burnet and Bourland a committee of finance, who report that they have received from the Churches this year $14.12 and from Bro. Allen $8.47, making in all $22.60

17. Took the reference up of last Association, respecting soliciting a correspondence with the Highland Association, requested Bro. Wm. Allen to write a letter to that Association, requesting them to open a correspondence with us and that Elders Pearce and Morse and Bro. Bourland bear the same.

18. Requested Bro. Wm. Allen to prepare these minutes for the Press and that Bro. J. Floyd superintend the printing of the same and distribute them, have 350 copies struck and reserve 20 copies for each corresponding Association, and that the above sum of $22.60 be left in the hands of Bro. Floyd as Treasurer this year.

19. After Praise and Prayer by the Moderator, the Association adjourned to the time and place appointed.
