Obituary (From Grandma Deems) 1917 - 1925

William Dalph, only son of Robert and America Barker, was born at Broughton, Ill., May 19, 1895. Was killed in action "Somewhere in France" on the night of July 27, 1918, according to letters received from boys in his Company, and was laid to rest in an English cemetery near where they rested after the battle, with military honors.

He was married to Miss Terna Williamson of Alton, Ill., Aug. 29, 1917: slightly more than a month before he departed for Camp Dalph. Left Alton on Oct. 5th with a contingent of drafted men and went to Camp Taylor, from which camp he was transferred to Camp Logan, Houston, Texas. He was transferred next to Camp Upton, Yaphank, N. Y., and from there went over seas. He departed for France May 15th last and celebrated his twenty-third birthday on board ship. A letter written by him to his wife dated July 26th stated he was in good health. The word of his death came a few minutes later. He is survived by his wife and three sisters, Mrs. Albert Vessel of Alton, Mrs. Lottie, Edward and Miss Anne Barker of Broughton and his stepmother, Mrs. Lou Barker, of Broughton, and a host of relatives and friends who will mourn his untimely death. Funeral services were conducted by Eld. Reeder, of the Presbyterian church of Broughton.
