FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY

When the Freshmen Class enrolled Sept, 1939, it consisted of 18 members. Four members, Faye and Mae Smith and Ruth & Hallie Johnson were forced by illness and unfavorable transportation conditions to leave school during the first part of the year.

The first event of the year was the freshmen initiation party, sponsored by the upper classman, who planned the much dreaded initiation rites, which needless to say, were braved by the "Victims" with no serious consequences. After a sufficient amount of the freshmans "green paint" had worn off the entire student body went out-of-doors to play games and to enjoy a weiner and marshmallow roast.

Five of the boys went out for basketball - Stanley Sutton, Eugene Barlow, Bernard Foutch, Robert Foutch, and Ray Shasteen. Three of them, Bernard, Robert and Stanley, played on the first team and at the close of the season were awarded letters, which proved their value as players.

Two freshmen, Ruth Johnson and Lyman Greer Jr took part in the Christmas play. Four of the girls, Juewll Matthiew, Grace Bealmer, Evelyn Ewell, and Beulah Mick were in the Cast of "My Cousin from Sweden".

When the freshmen first entered B. H. S. they were called "green freshies," but they were all good sports and enjoyed being Freshmen throughout the year. Their sincere hope is that the incoming freshmen will enjoy their first year of high school as much as the freshmen of 1939 - 40 did theirs.

Sophomore Class History

On Sept 1, 1938 a group of 25 freshmen entered Broughton High School. After being properly initiated by the Upper Classmen at a party soon after school had started, the freshmen were called upon to take part in some of the extra curricular actrivities. Lee Roy Sullivan, James Nichols & Joe Jones showed an interest in basketball, and Betty Pennington, Elsie Kimmel & Grace Davis proved their dramatic ability in "Thursdays At Home". K. C. Curtis capably assumed a detective role in "The Midnight Ghost".

The class came back as sophomores in the fall of 1939. Mr. Walkins, who succeeded Mr Barker, chose two sophomore boys to play on the second B B team, namely James Nichols and Lee Roy Sullivan. "Jimmy" also played on the first team the latter part of the season. Two members of the class, Grace Davis and Joe Jones, secured leading roles in the three act play "Aunt Susie Shoots The Works". Betty Pennington, Elsie Kimmel and Dorothy Gunter acted in "My Cousin from Sweden", presented the night of the graduation exercises.

We have done well this year and next year we expect to do even better, for we shall be entering our third or junior year.

Jessie Garrett and Haroldean McGill.

1939 - B. H. S. BEACON - 1940

On Sept 1, 1937, nineteen freshmen entered B. H. S. Several of them were found to be good basketball and baseball players, and two Clyde Allen Acord and Donald Cotter received parts in the spring play. The class officers chosen for the year was Lorenzo (Buck) Gholson, President, Donald Cotter, Vice President, and Ruth Miller, Secretary - Treasurer.

The following year found most of the student back as sophomores. Amon Shasteen, whose freshman year was spent at Walpole High School, joined the class. Again, the class was well represented in basket ball and soft ball. The sophomores by this time were beginning to feel at home and had quite a voice in the running of student affairs. Several sophomores secured parts in the two one-act plays presented in the spring of 1939. Joan Porter, Nan Gwaltney, and Josie Logsdon acted in "Thursdays At Home" and Onieta Russell, Ruth Miller, Ina Ewell and Amon Shasteen played in "The Midnight Ghost". The class officers elected were Donald Cotter President, Nan Gwaltney, Secretary - Treasurer.

The fall of 1939 found these sophomores back as dignified Juniors. In basket ball, Amon Shasteen and Donald Cotter again played on the first team. Several Juniors were in the play"Aunt Susie Shoots the Works", namely Ina Ewell, Nan Gwaltney, Ruth Miller, Josie Logsdon, Onetia Russell, Joan Porter, Claude Owen, Junior Owen, and Amon Shasteen. This year the Juniors are sponsoring the first year book that B. H. S. has ever published.

We, the Juniors, are now leaving B. H. S. and shall go to different cities and schools next year. We wish our freshman and sophomore classmates luck and hope that they will make next year as successful and happy as this one has been.
