John R. Shroyer 1931 - 2005

John R. Shroyer, 74, of Long Creek, died 11:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 in his home.

Memorial services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home in Mt. Zion. Burial was in Point Pleasant Cemetery in Long Creek. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made in his name to Stepping Into the Light Homeless Shelter, 1402 Herbert Street, St. Louis, Mo. 63107 or the American Heart Association.

John was born in Broughton, the son of Dan and Esther Shroyer on Sept. 27, 1931. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and in September 1951 was transferred to the U.S. Marines, with whom he served in Korea until his discharge in November 1952. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1956 and then attended Kent College of Law while working in Chicago for the next year. In 1957 he joined A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. in Decatur where he worked until his retirement in April 1989. His entire career with Staley was in the International Division, where he held several positions, including two assignments in South America, where he and his family resided for a total of seven years. He married Kathleen M. Harrison on Sept. 2, 1952.

Surviving are his children Joyce Liesman and her husband Aaron of Lincoln, Dan Shroyer and his wife Annette of St. Louis Mo., Del Shroyer and his wife Kelly of O'Fallon, Mo., and Judy Greenfield and her husband Kevin of Long Creek: sisters, June Melton of Fort Wayne, Ind.: Jane Allen of Dallas Texas, and Dana Waters of Fort Wayne, Ind.; grandchildren, Adam and Rachael Liesman, Owen and Danielle Shroyer, Kasey and Ryan Shroyer and Emily Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and parents.

The family greatly appreciates and thanks all who kept him in their thoughts and prayers.
