* 1937 - FLOOD WATERS INVADE COUNTY, Many in vicinity of Broughton Forced to Seek Refuge from Back Water. Newspaper and radio accounts of the great flood throughout the Ohio Valley have become a grim reality to many Hamilton county families residing in the southeast part of the County as a result of the steadily rising back waters from the Wabash and Ohio Rivers that have inundated hundreds of acres of land in Mayberry, Crook and Twigg Townships, driving scores of families from their farm homes in the low lands to seek refuge on higher ground. Such a deluge of flood waters has never before been experienced in the history of the County. steadily rising since the fore part of last week, the flood waters backing up in Ten Mile Creek, North Fork Drainage ditch and Rector Creek have inundated the countryside from a point a short distance south of Dale extending to within a short distance of Eldorado. State Highway route 142, between these two points is completely submerged as well as the Shawneetown branch of the L & N Railroad, tying up traffic. According to reports from Broughton, the Village is almost completely surrounded and partly under water, flooding several homes and business houses in the northern part. Many farmers living in Mayberry township have been forced to abandon their homes and remove their livestock. Broughton is said to be crowded with refugees, and plans were being made here Wednesday afternoon by National guardsmen and the Hamilton County Chapter of the American Red Cross to remove to McLeansboro as many as would leave. Four motor boats are being operated by Red Cross volunteer workers and State employees in the flooded areas, and a barge was recently constructed by W.P.A. workers, under the supervision of S. H. Shephard and R. L. McNabb, to transport supplies to Broughton. The barge was launched on the flood waters, south of Dale Tuesday and carried a load of coal to the residents of Broughton. The flood waters, which are beginning to recede slightly in the vicinity of New Haven, Maunie, Ridgway and other points to the East, were still rising slightly in the flooded areas of Hamilton County Wednesday according to relief workers, but it is expected to reach a stand today (Thursday) after which it will probably recede slowly. Damage to Hamilton County property, as a result of the high waters has not been estimated, but is expected to be considerable.

* 1937 - Broughton New, Times Leader - The worst flood in history started the first of last week, gradually creeping up, until it has now reached the business section. A row boat can be launched starting at the Methodist Church and going north within one mile of Dale, to the south the water is over the highway four miles or more and east three or more miles. There have already been over 100 people forced to leave their homes and the water is still rising and if it continues a few days more, more will be compelled to seek higher ground. The water is now already in several houses and north of town on the Seven Oak Farm water is reaching the second story, that is just one of the several near by. Several boats have been brought here to help the people and they are indeed thankful to those who helped. The Chairman of the Red Cross wishes to thank the people of Broughton for their loyalty and contributing clothing, food and money for the flood victims. Schools have been dismissed and business is at a stand still. There are five families quartered at the Primary School building now.
