Letitia Jane (Gaines) Owen 1840 -1920

Born 29 December 1840 in Roanoke Co. Virginia the daughter of Gibson Wortham Gaines & Ann Thrasher. After the death of her mother, Gibson brought the children to Illinois in 1848. Gibson, with his wagon load of 7 children, Mary Elizabeth, Robert, Margaret, James Henry, Lorenzo, Letitia Jane & Susan Matilda arrive in Illinois. He must have swept his new bride off her feet as he married again 27 November 1849 to Mahala (Porter) Gholson, Hudson, who had lost a couple of husbands to early deaths. Mahala becomes step-mother to the above children as well as mother to her own four children.

Letitia married William Thomas Owen 08 January 1863. He died 28 October 1900. They had 9 children. Letitia called "Tish" or Aunt Tish died 04 July 1920 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Maud Owens. 4 children survive. Leaves children, 1 sister Susan Matilda Keasler, Broughton, 2 brothers; Lorenzo Gaines, Broughton, James Gaines, Francis Mills; 2 sons; Omer Owens, Broughton & William A. Owens, Broughton; 2 daughters Laurinda Shroyer, Broughton & Mrs. Maud Owens. Interred Gholson Cemetery.
