Obituary

S. Joseph Porter, son of William T. and Sarah E. Porter was born in Hamilton County, Illinois, Sept. 23, 1870, and departed this life at the McLeansboro Hospital Monday, March 15, 1937, at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 22 days.

he was united in marriage with Rosa Riggs, Nov. 10, 1892. To this union one daughter, Elsie was born. She passed away at the age of about 7 years. His wife preceded him in death about two years ago.

He was again united in marriage on Nov. 20, 1937 with Irene Caldwell, who survives him.

Mr. Porter was a christian man. During young manhood he made a profession of faith and united with the Presbyterian Church.

His death was caused by an accidental collision of automobiles about five miles south of McLeansboro.

About 35 years ago, Mr. Porter was employed by Burnett & Allen as a clerk in their store at Broughton. About two years after his employment the store burned, after which it was reorganized under the name of Allen Store Company, at which time he became a partner in the firm, in which capacity he continued until his death. He was a successful businessman and was very prominently connected with the affairs of the community for the betterment of the citizens.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M., Broughton Illinois and was prominent in Masonic circles.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, Mrs Irene Porter, two brothers, Frank Porter of McLeansboro, Oren T. Porter of Knowville, Iowa; three nieces, Mrs. Essie Grable, whom he partially raised, Mrs. Lena Austin, Knoxville, Iowa, and Mrs. Virginia Schrieber of St. Louis, Mo., and one nephew, Joseph Porter of Dallas Iowa, and other relatives and friends.

Crossing The Bar

Funeral services were conducted by Elder John B. Maulding at the Baptist Church in Broughton Wednesday, Mar. 17, 1937, under the auspices of the local Masonic Lodge. Interment took place in the Gholson cemetery. The pallbearers were Raleigh Sutton, T.R. Matts, L. L. Ruphard, Lymon Greer, C.E. Moutry, Loomis Hardesty
