Cynthia Windes, was the first wife of Rev. George Shumate.  She was born to the Rev. William A. Windes and his wife Nancy (possibly surname Estes).  Rev. William was born 1795 to Enoc Windes and Sarah Dumville Windes in Society Hill, SC.  Enoch was born 1765, Sarah in 1770.

The family moved to Ste. Genevieve, MO around 1805.  Williamd and Nancy lived in Craawford County first, but were in Camden County by 1840.  The families must have traveled together.  They were living side by side in 1850, with the Robertson Family, living as neighbors also.  Mr. Robertson was a Methodist circuit rider who helped establish the Methodist church in Miller County.

William and Nancy's family were:

William A. Windes 1795 to Nov. 19, 1868 in Crawford Co., MO.

William and four unmarried daughters moved back to Crawford County before 1860, after Nancy died.  Two married, two remained single and lived out their lives on the family homestead, (Sarah and Eliza).  They are buried beside their father at Fairview Cemetery, Courtois Township.  The area was called "Winds" on a Crawford Co. Map in 1872.
