For the past ten years I have been doing a lot of work on my family forebears and now want to begin to put some of it online. Most of my ancestors come from Leicestershire in the UK and include the names Holt, Goacher, Scott, Prime and Adcock. Some came from Derbyshire and these names are Tomlinson, Chadfield and Wright.
In the process of following them up I have learnt a lot about their lives. I have learnt about Framework Knitting, about the Coal Mining and the Coalfields of Leicestershire and Derbyshire and the Poor Laws of 18th century England. None of my ancestors have been rich and some have been very poor. One gained a certain local notoriety when he was shot on his way back from Leicester Market one summer's evening in 1854.
I have learned much about Leicestershire, searching many a graveyard for memorials. There haven't been many, - the beautifully inscribed Swithland slates were too expensive for ordinary labourers and Frame-work Knitters, - but it does get to be addictive and there's still many a graveyard to be trawled yet!
I have included links on this site to others that I have been in contact with, or to relevant sites or just ones that I liked a lot.
Here are some of my favorite websites:
