Like many others I have become interested in knowing about my ancestors. Being located in New Zealand, together with my age, I am limited in my access to the knowledge that I would like to have.
The starting point for my quest began with my grandmother Helen Moir (nee Moir), b.10 Apr 1865 Insch, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In the mid 1880's she emigrated to NZ where she met and married Alexander Milne, b.20 Oct 1858, Boharm, Morayshire, Scotland. Gf.Alexander is thought to have emigrated from Keith, Banffshire, Scotland - his family originate from Rothiemay, Scotland. Helen and Alexander settled in Woodville, NZ and raised a family of 10.
Local family hearsay indicates that gm. Helen was part of a family of seven. I am not convinced that this was the case.
I have found that gm. Helen has two brothers - James b.1856 and William b.1860 (both in Insch). There is a puzzle in that the mother of gm Helen is recorded as Isabella Horn. The mother of James is recored as Isobella Horn; William has Isobel Horn recorded as his mother. The name of the father is Andrew Moir for all.
Other names thought to be part of gm's family are - Andrew b.1844 Peter b.1845 (apparently emigrated to Canada) Barbara b.1849 and, George b.1851 (emigrated to Australia)
A further puzzle is that some family members are convinced that we have a ISOBEL HORNE as a grandparent - these names have been carried on over the generations.
The search goes on!
Other family names of interest are CARMICHAEL, HORN, HORNE, and MILNE.
