The Scott Family
surname: Cauffman
Cauffman is my maiden name so I have a lot of interest in tracing it. Yet, compared to other names in my line, it has been very difficult to find much information.
Based on U.S. Census data I have traced the Cauffmans back to Jacob Cauffman (abt 1795 - ?). He was a resident of the Norristown, Pennsylvania area.
You can view Jacob Cauffman's Descendant Report to the 6th generation. I summarize the U.S. Census data below.
The Norristown Library was founded around 1795. One of the founders was listed as the "John Cauffman Family." I have a hunch that John Cauffman was Jacob's father but I have no evidence of this.
There is a marriage record from St. James' P.E. Church, Perkiomen (Pennsylvania) as follows:
1793, April 2 Cauffman, John, and Margaret Wade.The date and approximate area may indicate the same John Cauffman that was included with the founders of the Norristown Library.
Cauffman Census Data
All the information included about Jacob Cauffman and his immediate family is based on conclusions drawn from U.S. Census data. All census data is included here.
He apparently lived in Montgomery County most or all of his life. It is difficult to determine how many wives Jacob had and which children belong to which wife. The 1860 census is the last record we have of him. Because we cannot find him in the 1870 census, the compiler believes he probably died between 1860-1870.
