Anton Krautlager was born in Bavaria, Germany on July 25, 1847. The family name was originally "Strasser." For unknown reasons, the name was changed to Krautlager (also spelled Krautlarger).
Anton married Magdalena Dick, born in 1851 in Bavaria. They were married in 1872 in Bavaria.
Anton arrived in America at the port of Baltimore, Maryland on the ship Baltimore on June 29, 1874. Magdalena arrived in America on August 28, 1874 in Baltimore, Maryland on the ship Braunschweig.
They later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where five of their children were born. My understanding, from Josie Kunkel, was that Anton was a farmer and a "hard taskmaster." His children were made to work in the fields for long hours every day. They had little or no schooling, except what their mother was able to give them.
At some point in time, Anton relocated with his family to Kansas. Anton & Magdalena had ten children: Andrew, Barney, Josephine, Annie, Christina, George, Stephen, Edward, Mary and Lilly.
Magdalena died on June 19, 1919 at 9:19 p.m. at Blein or Brein Hill (this may have been a hospital) on Harwood Street in Kansas City, Kansas. Grandma Josie often spoke about the number of 9's in her Mother's death date; this had some significance for her.
Anton remarried in 1920 to Magdalene Koenig in Kansas City, Missouri. Anton and Magdalene Koenig had five children: Matthew Koenig (Stepchild), Theresa Nick (Stepchild), Lena Kirshe (Stepchild), Josephine Augnst (Stepchild) and Mary Smith (Stepchild).
Anton died on October 2, 1933 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
