Lewis Freeman Byfield, Senior was born 22 Jan. 1825, the son of George Byfield (Birth: BET. 1793 - 1800 in PA - Death: BET. 1 - 11 JUN 1845 in Johnson Township, Scott Co IN) (follow this link for his will) and Magdalena Simonson. One sister was Maria Byfield who married Christian Young.ID: I1826

Lewis Freeman Byfield, Sr. and Ruth Ann Kashow were married in Jefferson Co., IN on 4/3/1845. Lewis and Ruth had two children: (1) James Madison Byfield b. Oct. 13, 1846 and d. May 22, 1847 at 1 yr, 7 mon., and 9 days. (2) Lewis Freeman Byfield (Junior) was born Feb. 4, 1849 ...just 24 days after his father's death. Lewis Freeman Byfield, Senior, died January 10, 1849, aged 23 yrs, 11 months, 20 days.

Ruth Ann Kashow was born July 5, 1826 in Ohio, the daughter Daniel A. Kashow and Elizabeth Higgins. She died May 6, 1907 in Clatskanie, Columbia County, Oregon. Her siblings were: Robert B. Kashow; Sarah Kashow; Mary H. Kashow (who married John Tobias on 8/2/1831); Lanor N. Kashow; Jonathon E. Kashow; Danield A. Kashow, Jr.; Eliza Kashow; Harriet Kashow; Israel Kashow; Peter B. Kashow and Jane J. Kashow. Ruth Ann being the oldest of 12 children.

Ruth Ann Kashow Byfield married #2 William Jefferson Young on December 18, 1851 in Scott Co., IN....he was the son of Abner and Jane (Waldsmith) Young. One sibling was Christian Young who married Maria Byfield, sister to Lewis Freeman Byfield, Senior, Ruth's first husband.. Wm. and Ruth had 6 children...all were born in Alpha, Scott Co., IN.

The family moved to Girard, Crawford County, Kansas.

Wm. was b. Feb. 8, 1830 in Hamilton Co., OH and d. June 14, 1876 in Girard, Crawford Co., KS. After Wm. died, Ruth remained on the farm in KS (confirmed by 1880 census). She sold the farm on August 7th, 1888 and the warranty deed shows over 160 acres. She eventually moved to Oregon where most of her children lived and in 1896 she moved in with her oldest son to help raise the children when her daughter-in-law died.


YOUNG, Christian Waldsmith d. 15 March 1871 at age 46 yrs, 4 mon, 25 days; consort of Maria (Byfield) Young. Christian was born October 18th, 1824 in Hamilton Co., OH. The son of Abner and Jane (Waldsmith) Young and older brother to William Jefferson Young (who married Ruth Ann Kashow Byfield.)

Christian married Maria Byfield in Scott County, IN on October 1st, 1846. She was the daughter of George Byfield and Magdalena Simonson - and older sister to Lewis Freeman Byfield, Senior. She was born May 17th, 1828 in IN and died May 1899 in Scott Co., IN (the date her will was proved).

After Christian's death in 1871 Maria Byfield Young married #2 David Tobias (date unknown). The David Tobias whom Maria married was born c. 1812 in Wales (according to census records). His previous (1st?) wife's name was Ann (also according to census records). (Note: This David Tobias is not the one who is buried in the McClain Cemetery. The David Tobias in that cemetary - was b. April 10th, 1804 and d. July 16, 1881 -was the husband of Lydia (McClain) Tobias, daughter of John & Barbara (Miller) McClain.- Ginger White)

Maria then married #3 James Bovard (widower of Sarah Young Bovard, Christian's sister) on 6 June 1889 (from marriage license and certificate signed by Charles A. Manker). He died 19 Oct 1889. Maria's will was probated 29 May 1899. She received a widow's pension for James Bovard and was last paid $8.00 up to 4 Feb. 1899 (certificate #277706) and was dropped 3 Jan 1903 because of failure to claim for three years.
