FEIDLIMID was one of the rulers of Ireland during the beginning of the Sixth Century. He married Eithne who was the daughter of a ruler of Leinster, said to have been an illustrious King. Iogen, Columba and Cuimne were three children born to the union.
Columba, later known as St. Columcille, was born a few years after the death of St. Patrick's and he became an ardent disciple of St. Partick. Columba spent the early years of his life among the Scots in Ireland, later becoming the apostle to the Picts in Scotland. On the Isle of Iona , Columba established the first Christian Monastary in Scotland. The remainder of his days were spent there dedicated to the same causes for which St. Patrick lived and died.
Columba is reported as the first person to have seen the huge monster in Loch Ness !
CUIMNE, daughter of FEIDLIMID and sister to Columba (St. Columcille) married DECUII. They were the parents of Mhearnog, Meldal, Bran and Cascene.
MEARNOG was born about 550 A.D. . Mearnog is honored as a Saint and his name is enrolled among the Irish Saints of the Sixth Century. He was born into a Christian atmosphere and lived a life of chastity which could be witnessed by the honor roll of the Saints of Ireland. In the Sixth Century and for almost a thousand years thereafter the entire Christian Church was Catholic, and according to the custom of the Church, none were sainted save those who lived an exemplary and extraordinary chaste and upright life and preeminently zealous in work to which the Church was dedicated, and in which many of the early Saints gave to their lives.
The University of Chicago is said to endorse Mr. Michael O'Gallager as an authority on the Gaelic language. Mr. O'Gallagher informed a researcher that the name of MHEARNOG was also spelled with a "c" instead of a "g".
In addition Mr. O'Gallagher says," that the word "Giolla" at the present time means a lad, a youth, a fellow, an apprentice, an attendant, manservant, etc. In the olden times, especially with regard to religious people, the obvious meaning was disciple, follower, member of the household or family. " "Giolla Mhearnog" would mean a disciple or follower of MHEARNOG.
