These
boats worked the three rivers, Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio during
JW's lifetime, 1865 to 1948. They are not mentioned in his journals as
visiting the Elizabeth Marine Ways but I believe he was aware of many of
these boats, even those built many years after his retirement from the
Ways in 1925. I have the boats listed in the order of their construction
as listed in Way's Steam Towboat or Packet Directory. I do not know what
year the pictures were taken, unless noted.
Those boats
with the icon of a whistle indicate
you will be able to hear the actual whistle of that boat. These
whistles were recorded in 1965 and 1966 by the Sons and Daughters of
Pioneer Rivermen in Marietta, OH. They recorded 56 different whistles on
two record albums.
