Workers at Marine Ways from S&D Reflector June 1978

The photo above was taken at the Elizabeth Marine Ways showing workmen sitting atop a scow that is under construction, the photo was probably taken during the early 1900s.  JW writes about working on scows numerous times in his journal. The first entry is on April 9, 1900 when he writes about scows being at the Ways, several times he writes about working on Government  ("Gov") scows including May 10, 1902.  JW writes on April 9, 1904 that working on a scow is " hardest work I ever done." The last entry is on July 7, 1915 when he is on a scow while working in Dravosburg.

A scow is a barge constructed of "unusually large timbers, designed to accept rocks, gravel and dirt loaded into compartments." The debris is then taken to another location and dumped by means of opening the doors located on the sides.
