| Misc. Notes |
Seymour W. Ensign Sr. was a miller. In 1838 he migrated with his family to Grand Blanc, MI. Later they went on to the Brent farm just beyond the town of Montrose. In 1842 he bought 40 acres from the Brent estate on section 22, Montrose Township. He was the first white settler there. There were no roads or clearings. He tied two canoes together and built a platform on them. The family's goods and stores were transported down the Flint River to Floodwood Farm on this primitive vessel. There they waited ten days for the river to clear of floodwood. Their stock had to be driven by way of Flint. During the following winter he and his son George built a shanty on the forty acres and spent the winter cutting down trees for the cattle to graze to prevent them from starving. In the spring of 1843 the family moved into a small house that he built. Seymour died Aug. 21 1854, age 53 years.
His daughter Mary's marriage to Benjamin H. Morse was the first in Montrose Township and his daughter Amanda was the first white child born in the town of Montrose. |
